the cdn dollar - good time to buy now?
Hey guys, with the rebate going on of 1500, should I buy the car now?
Do you think it would make any difference if i waited until jan, as it seems the cdn dollar is still going up? Or would the best time to buy be right now? Thanks. |

i wouldn't buy from canadian dealers even with the 1500.... not that i have anything against them, it's just that their prices is not competitive (it's not even in the ballpark..) if the difference was only a grand or two... three tops, i would buy from them; but not at 10-12K....

Nobody here knows what's going to happen with the CDN$. If you want the car, just buy it now, or you'll always be waiting for a "better deal". Just do it!

I don't think Canadian prices, at least for a BMW, are going to go down much more than they have.
It's always going to be more expensive to buy one here so look closely at bringing one in from the U.S. Some analysts say the exchange rate will go up near $1.25 but the bottom line is no one really knows. It could keep dropping. |

Anything can happen, its a risk that you have to be willing to take. If you were looking into buying one soon, I personally would import from the states. You get a fully loaded 335 for the same price of a brand new 323??? or close...

Woah! not sure where your getting that idea from, unless your talking used, but a new fully loaded 335i runs about $50k USD basically the same as a 335i in Canada with no options. 323i's are $36k, nowhere close.

The $1500 rebate is a joke. Go buy in the US and do it soon while you still can. If you don't know how to do it on your own...go with an importer...there are lots of them doing it. Saving $10K to $15K on the car is well worth any hassle.
As for the Canadian dollar...there is a pretty good risk of it going back below par fairly quickly....but it would have to drop 25% for Canadian pricing to be back in line with US. |

The option groups have multiple pages so you need to page through to see all the options. For example, in the Convenience group you need to go to Page 2 to see iDrive / Nav.

Rebates and how to code DRL's
hi there, I noticed talk of the new rebates in this thread. Does anyone know what the range is? for a 335i coupe and for a 335i convertible?
Also, (related to importing...) i was reading in other posts that DRL's (the daytime running lights that are required in Canada) can simply be activated on a US model via iDrive. 1) Does iDrive only come when you pick the NAV option? 2) If the answer to the above is yes, and I don't want to get NAV, can the DRL's be activated any other way? Thanks for the help everyone! I'm so close to moving to the BMW side... PS Are most people here getting iDrive with their cars? I'd only heard bad things about it in the past, but it sounds pretty cool. |

iDrive only comes with NAV which I didn't get for my car. I already have a built in GPS on another and don't really need on another car. Plus those types of electronics are never problem free and (from experience) can be difficult to diagnose.
As for DRL, it doesn't matter in Canada. In the US DRL can be enabled/disabled on iDrive or stalk, but in Canada due to Transport Canada requirement, it can't be disabled via either method. |

My experience so far...
I looked very hard at a new 335xi from Canada, and ultimately bought a "used" 2007 (1500 miles) in Pennsylvania for $14000 CDN less than the best price I could find in Edmonton. The savings is after all the US-related costs are factored in (shipping, duty, brokerage, wire transfer, RIV, and the $500 RCL letter from BMW Canada).
The main benefit was cost, but it also appears that I'm going to get it faster than if I would have ordered a new 2008 from the dealer (January delivery). I don't see BMW lowering prices in Canada beyond a few rebates. Most cars are leased, and a lowering of prices will lower resale costs (and they have already committed to thousands of lease buy-backs). If the resale market tanks, they will lose margin on cars they have already sold, which is much more costly than trying to chase a few people who don't need to lease or finance. |

So from what you're saying, on a US BMW that doesn't have iDrive, you can still enable the DRL's via the stalk? I wanted to make sure the only way to do so isn't via the iDrive, or the dealer doing it via their diagnostic computer. |

If you're buying with cash, however, the rebates offered by BMW aren't nearly enough to compensate for the savings found by buying a near-new car in the US.
