Annoying sounds from inside 428i cabin [VIDEO]

So I'm starting to experience two little obtrusive sounds inside the cabin and would like to see if any other 428/35 owners have experienced these too and maybe help shed some light on this for me.

1. When driving solo with music off, I can hear a very low volume, but high pitch, buzzing sound. It's as if it's coming from in front of me, around the wheel/idrive display. When I have passengers in the car it's a non issue as the chatter tunes me out to it. but if driving solo and music is off, it's loud enough to be noticeable, and can get annoying.

2. I just got tints and driving above 60-70mph, there is noticeable wind noise from driver side window when fully closed. Could tinting a window in any way increase or change wind noise levels entering the cabin? Probably not but curious if the tinting has anything to do with this.

Main reason I'm asking about the above two issues is I like driving with the radio off a lot of the time, just driver+car time, and so any sound in the cabin becomes magnified.

Thanks

UPDATE: Took a quick video tonight as I got home. If you notice the high pitch whine get's a little louder around 14 seconds..

Same here with the buzzing noise - thought I was the only one. I can't quite tell where it's coming from - it's usually quite faint. Oddly enough, it's made louder when I listen to AM radio. I'm going to use a tone generator app on my phone to see if I can isolate what exactly is buzzing. (bad speaker? loose trim?) This really sucks on a brand new car.

I think the wind noise is normal - it was one of the first things I noticed when test-driving the F32 (coming from an E92).

The buzzing sounds are from the rear view mirror. It vibrates a little causing a buzzing sound.

I'll have a closer listen to the mirror today after work and see if I can pinpoint it

Nice Is there any proven aftermarket products for BMWs that can eradicate driver/passenger window wind noise? Something tested that works?

nothing that i know of? doesn't seem like a normal issue though. maybe since the car is new everything is still settling in and falling in to place.

i have tints on mine and no issues.

try what i did, opening/closing everything all over again. sounds stupid but, might work...

i don't get any wind noise nor buzzing sounds with the radio off...in fact my F32 is silent...except for one thing...

this rediculous "tap" in the back seat right behind the driver's seat...i cannot, for the life of me figure out where it's coming from and it's driving me crazy...it sounds like when a girl taps their fingernail on something...i've removed everything there is, checked the seatbelts, in between the cusions, everything and can't get rid of the noise

the fucked up part is that i've sat in the back while my wife drove my car to try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from...of course it doesn't happen when i sit back there, go figure

BMW sucks, plain and simple. These are well-known and well-document F30 issues, I have both of them and this forum discussed them to death. Obviously they made it to 4-Series.

Best bit? There is no fix.

Note to self: I might want to give up the idea of buying a 4-Series.

It really sucks that Mercedes, Audi and other cars I've driven have never had these issues, and yet the ultimate driving machine does. It's not a deal breaker for me and at the end of the day these are 1st world problems but I just don't expect buzzing sounds and wind noise from a 2014 Bimmer.

I guess I'll ask the dealer next time I'm there, to which I'm sure they will have no solution for.

1) I had the same noise but couldn't locate the source. I've tried many things and discovered that shutting the sunroof shade (or cover or blind or whatever that thing is called) makes it go away. At least for me.

2) No wind noise issue to report.

What bothers the f^&k out of me is not that I have the issues. Is that they haven't been fixed after three years!!!

I really doubt that's the reason it's happening in mine as it clearly sounds like an electronic buzz, not something that's being caused by a cover or flap or something. Glad you found the source to your issue.

I think this is more a problem with BMW quality control than the dealerships. I mean every car is different and any one of a number of components could be responsible for cabin noise, so I doubt the dealerships will go out of their way to find the problem. I blame BMW for not checking these things on a $55k car before sending it out of Germany for delivery

Either way I drive past sterling BMW here in Newport on the way home from work every day anyway so I'll stop by tomorrow or sometime and see what they have to say.

Pretty sure the conversation will go something like this

Me: Hello, I am experiencing a very annoying buzzing sound from inside the cabin when the windows are shut and music is off

THEM: Hmm, I can't hear anything

ME: It's more noticeable at night when there is less outside noise

THEM: Yeah, I really can't hear anything

I'm getting two (different, I think) noises:

1) annoying buzz - most evident when I'm listening to AM radio (talk shows and stuff)
2) light ticking noise - so light that I have no idea where it might be coming from

I'm going to see if I can find some time tonight or maybe this weekend to use a tone-generator to see if it's some sort of reverberation/vibration that's happening (maybe for only #1).

Oh, and good to see you over at this forum too -- hope you're enjoying your new 428, aside from the noises.

Hey ETC!

Came to register here and realized I already had a dormant account from years ago.

And besides the little rattles and buzzes, I'm loving the car. I remember my first ever bimmer, a 96' 316i coupe. For a student back in London at the time, it was like a ferrari for me. I loved it, and didn't mind the rattles. I almost expected it to have SOME cabin noise, being second hand with 100k miles on the clock, the whole car cost me £2650. But a 2014, $55k model? Come on BMW.

Looking forward to see what you find out, keep us posted plz

I am still experiencing these intermittent "rattling," humming, vibrating issues on my 435i AT. It seems to be a prominent issue with both the 3 and 4 Series.

I've taken it into BMW twice and they have not been able to fix the issue. 1st time they tightened the underbody heat shields (which didn't do it), second time they did nothing. I have also experienced a croaking steering wheel and now a squeaky brake pedal and USB/AUX output issue.

I've been following this intermittent rattling issue on the posts and here's what I've collected so far.........

Possible Causes:
"Dealer traced it to inside the bottom dashboard. They removed the instrument panel and found the footwell vent to be loose and hitting the kick panel. Sound gone!"

"So bottom line for me, is that I'm convinced at this point that there is an air damper somewhere that opens and closes the top vent, and that damper is loose or defective, which is why it rattles. The rattles stop (or start) if the damper gets activated, probably a moving part that goes out of alignment or back into alignment as we play with the damper. The damper must be located somewhere near the steering column because that is where the noise appears to be coming from. If there is absolutely no damper or any active part to do with HVAC in this area then I'm wrong. I wasn't able to make out the Real OEM drawing on this."

"replace AC Compressor"

"They say the noise goes away when they pull the serpentine belt, so the only thing left on there would be the alternator. The compressor and pulleys were replaced and the steering is electric"

"gearbox replacement"

"reseated some pieces in the area around the radiator support and front shroud. They found two metal pieces vibrating together and when the engine was under it magnified the sounds 10 x"

"reseated "all" of the covers in the engine bay, checked the exhaust and heat shields, and reseated the radiator"

"defective heater core assembly"

"Turned out it was a loose windshield wiper hose in the cavity behind the right fender well."

"all the pieces around the strut brace and right under the windshield that were doing it. Reseated and felt taped the rubbing parts one day as suggested in the thread. Has never come back

I have a light ticking noise as well. Mine comes from the headlining handle, or whatever you call it, to the top-left of my head. In its normal position, does this tick-tick most of the time. Very faint, very hard to locate. If I pull down on it, like I'm old or fat and I'm trying to get off the car, it stops ticking. Maybe it helps, at least to diagnose.

Try completely turning off the ventilation (including AC). The high pitch sounds stops.

I have the buzzing sound as well (when it's quiet in the car). It's definitely electronic. Love the car otherwise...

Ventilation completely off, music and idrive screen off, windows completely shut, the buzzing sound is always there as long as the car is on
