Tire Brand for the 18" Wheel
I was going to order the 18 inch wheels and tires. I am an old autoX who always selected the smallest reasonable diameter wheels. The pictures of the 19 inch shows Michelin Super Sports. I do not see that Michelin makes a 275/40/18 in Super Sports for the rear. Does this mean that Michelin will start producing that size or will BMW use a lower level tires on the 18 inch wheels?

BMW normally uses more than one OEM tire, even for M cars. If you get 19s likely no guarantee that you will get PSS tires. Same for the 18s. On your other point, yes Michelin would make a size specific for a model. Al tire mfgs do this to some degree, if not just for sizes but also thing like load rating. You will note certain markers like a star on the sidewall which would denote that it is an OEM spec tire. BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Ferrari and others do this.

yes, I do think Michelin would create this size for BMW. but I do also recognize that there could be up to three different tires BMW chooses to use (Pzero's, Contis, Super Sports). Last edited by Brosef; 02-08-2014 at 09:56 PM.. |

If you look at the 19" tires on the show cars, they have a * marking, which I'm told tells that it's a tire made specifically for a manufacturer. Guide to Michelin markings: http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/tyre-reader |

A friend of mine does rep work for Michelin and he's stated that the M3/M4 will come with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. He's also very well connected with BMW NA and BMW Motorsports and recently signed a contract with BMW CCA. He currently owns an E46 M3 with PSSs and plans to buy an M4.

You can't achieve 0-60 in 3.9/4.1 without PSS... :-). I have PSS and these tires are amazing. Significantly better than PS2. So I think BMW will ask Michelin to produce PSS in 275/40/18 size.

I'd be kind of pissed if I didn't get PSS on a new F8X M3/M4. That surely is the street tyre of choice currently of all equivalent competitors offerings

I called Michelin today and was told they show nothing about going to production on a 275/40/18 in the Pilot Super Sport. I would hate to go 18s and find there is not availability of a high performance tire in that size. I even called Tire Rack and was told that there is not an equivalent to the PSS by any other manufacturer. I wonder what BMW will mount on the 18 inch rims.

Wow good question. Maybe we'll get the 265 on the rear? It really wouldn't lose much to the 275, but it would be a slight disadvantage.

What performance tires are currently available for the 18" wheels? Has anyone looked this up yet?
edit: It look's like PS2's are available for the rears at least, Potenza RE050a's are also available, they're decent. Can someone remind me what the front tire size will be? Last edited by ///Mobbin; 02-28-2014 at 10:38 AM.. |

M3/M4 were advertised as equipped with PSS tires, at least for the 19 inch sizes.
Michelin already make PS2 in 255/40/18 and 275/40/18, but since PSS is relatively newer and is not available in that many different sizes.
