BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe diesel engine confusion

Can someone please explain to me BMW decision regarding 20d engine in 4GC?
Six days ago they have introduced the 4GC with old 184 hp and 380 Nm max torque 20d engine. Four days after that they announce X3 facelift with brand new 20d engine which has 190hp and 400 Nm max torque. BMW claims the new 20d is seven per cent more fuel efficient and 0.4 seconds quicker from 0-100km/h and produces less CO2 emission than the old one. All of this means that this new engine is quicker but cheaper to run and keep in mind that this 20d engine is by far the best selling BMW engine in Europe.
I am totally confused, why would they put this old engine in the brand new car and few days later announce the new one? Why didn’t they put the new 20d immediately in 4GC?
What is the logic to buy this car now when you can probably wait half a year or so for 2015 model and get a better engine for the same amount of money which will be cheaper to run?
I am totally confused right now.

You make an excellent point, if this is in fact true. I hope it's just a misunderstanding, because if not, would be incredibly frustrating.

From a pure sales standpoint however, it does makes sense. The 4 GC will sell based mostly on it's looks and and the fact that it is a totally new car so they can offer it with a "leftover" engine and people will still line up for it (probably costs BMW less money to stick with the old engine, since they are just using up inventory). The X3 is a mid-cycle refresh and could use all the help it can get in order to generate more marketing and sales buzz, including a brand new engine. This is my theory only, since you asked.

Well, I think your theory may make a lot of sense! It is a real looker so people with less knowledge than us won't really give a damn about exactly which 20d engine is used.
So at least people on this forum that are considering the car can wait for a few months before ordering

As there's only 6bhp difference I reckon it's down to how the exhausts route through.

At least you get the option. I don't think the diesels are even coming to the US.
