Most results are just a piece of mind. Most testing is done for flow capacity in terms of paper vs. foam vs. oiled. Youll find a lot of threads on this in the forced induction section.

+1, not to mention those filters will allow a much higher level of pollutants into the engine and oil. I think minor gains are not worth the longevity of the engine, IMHO.

My mechanic who has done at least 50 BMW engine rebuilds told me that if I am lucky I'll get 5 more HP in the upper range but that will drastically increase the amount of dirt going into the engine.

ya I think 4-5 hp is what k&N claims? it's not much, and you can't feel it. I bought mine for reasons mentioned above.

I've heard that again and again. However this is my 3rd K&N and I typically keep my cars for 6-8 years. I've never had any problems with these. No engine problems at all! Maybe I'm just lucky though. I have put one in my 335i and my wife's SUV too!

I would be interested in a Used oil Analysis of your oil after 5k miles vs. my oil after 5k miles. Then we could compare the contaminants that reach the oil. I have 1,500 miles on my oil (3k on car) and will change it at 6,500 miles. I'll do an analysis and post it. It would be great if someone with a K&N would do the same for comparison. Assuming similar driving conditions, it would put the argument to rest for everyone.

Actually, if you want to get really technical about it, you should wait longer. If the oil is what actually traps the particals in the K&N, then you would want to wait till you have at least 15k on it before you test the oil(I would think). At 6500k the filter is still new enough that its not letting that much pass through.

Then again, the climate youre in has a lot to do with it too. In AZ or NV they have a lot more sandstorms than we do up here in the northeast. Therefore everyone will have different oil analysis'. I think you need to get a widerspread demographic for this to actually be valid. Cant take one car at 6500 that shows millions more particals being let through in the oil and say thats the complete truth. Another car in the complete opposite of the country might have only 100 particals let through at the same interval.

Some people who just go by what the car says to do.

Regardless, Im saying wait at least 15000 miles on the filter. Even if the oil is fresh youll see how many particals are in it.

I'm not a most knowledgable guy when it comes to engines, but know the basics.

Air and fuel go into the combuston chamber, spark flashes, air and fuel go bang and then out the exaust.

How would particals in the air (via intake though the air filter) get into the oil, or much at all? Would not the particals get burned and disintegrate?

Thanks.
