Frozen windows
Anybody else have frozen windows? Had to pry into my passenger door and start the car to thaw it out. What a bad design. Anyone have any tricks?

Did you wash your car and let it sit outside?

I've had 2 other cars (including my current Mini) that have had frameless windows and I haven't had any problems with them that I haven't had with other vehicles that get iced. I've lived in the midwest my entire life and have some kind of issue with every type of vehicle I've owned when we get freezing rain, either the doors have frozen shut, the door handles, or the windows, it's just the nature of the beast. Either buy a can of spray de-icer or fill a milk jug with hot water and pour along the edge of the window to thaw it long enough to get your window unstuck and then crank the defrost.

Had a similar problem. The window was not coming down when opening the door because of the ice. Came back after letting the car run for a while.
More surprisingly, the spoiler was also stuck and kept giving me warnings on the highway (not to exceed 80mph or the car could be unstable). Had to break a lot of ice to free it up. BMW should probably have a defroster on the spoiler. Anyone else experienced a spoiler malfunction? FM

Yes...this is a huge pain with this car in the cold weather. Had trouble getting the door open the last time we had snow/ice, and then the door wouldn't shut since the window doesn't clear the door frame when it won't roll down slightly. It did it once more when it was under 10 degrees outside (no ice).
Not looking forward to the ice we have coming to NC again tomorrow! |

We had a Celica and a Mustang way back in the late 90s and both had frameless windows. Every single part on the Mustang froze shut every time it was left outside (including the gas tank door and cap) and both cars had problems with windows and locks freezing. I don't know if this is a factory-approved method, but what we did as clueless 20 year olds was put a thin coat of vaseline around the rubber seal of the window so it couldn't stick. Seemed to help. During really bad ice storms (we had a lot of those in Southern/Central Indiana), we had to use lock de-icer spray on the locks, door jams, windows seals, etc. When we lived in the ice belt though, we always, always had a little can of lock de-icer in our pockets.

I've had several BMW's and MINI cars with frameless windows, the only solution was using window defroster and spray the window, let it sit for a while, pushing the lower edge helps breaking it loose from the lower rubber seal. For my daily driver, I'm glad I went back to framed.

You can put thin layer of silicon lube, or the kind from a spray can. And apply car wax to the painted side. It'll acreate a water barrier. No water, no ice. At least not on rubber parts.
If it's a big ice storm that cover the whole car, not much to do for that. Maybe keep the car nice a waxed, so water runs off better, and create a barrier that will have the ice cling less than if it was just paint. |
