328d oil change
My experience performing motor oil change with less than 10K.............
My first oil change was at 5K miles on my own. The oil level capacity is not listed in the manual; so, I checked with three BMW dealers and got three different answers as to the amount of motor oil needed with the filter. The answers were...7qts., 7.5qts., and 8qts. So, I put in 7qts. just to be on the safe side. I did the iDrive oil level computation and it showed "maximum". I also checked the oil level using the dipstick and it read higher than maximum. I then called the service manager who agreed to look into my concerns. During the initial call, he said there is no dipstick. An hour later he called back and told me there was an oil dipstick and the refill is 5.5qts. He also provided me with the pic from the BMW online tech manual listing the oil capacity for my car. Put it in, take it out, what a pain. I'm hopeful my future experiences will be better.

Basically, as your oil does all that mileage, crud that goes into the oil settles into the sump (think of the sump like a bilge tank on a boat). Then, when you take out the drain plug at the bottom of the sump, you empty that bilge tank. If you use one of those pumps, all that crud stays in the sump. There is a phrase that comes to mind : penny wise, pound foolish. |

It's funny that you use the bilge pump example. The vacuum tool is exactly how they change the oil on many boats, because pan access is a problem. I'd be interested to hear if ECS TUNING feels that oil changes using the pump are less effective. In my own experience, the pump seems to get all the oil, and I thought particulates were suspended in the (still hot) oil.

Yup, as you say, those pumps are used on boat engines where access is an issue.
But boat engines usually have much shorter oil change intervals (100 to 150 hours). At an average speed of even 60 mph, that would work out at an oil change every 6,000 to 9,000 miles. But marine engine usage is very different to car engine usage, I'll accept that. Regarding using the pump, or using the sump plug : if you buy the 'service kit' there is a sump plug washer included, for you to change. That tells me everything about the 'right' way of doing the job. |

Regarding these oil changes, use of syphon pumps, etc. I knew I'd seen an interesting article somewhere, here it is :

So for sure it's 5.5 quarts? Normally E9x gas Bmw's take approx 7 litres of oil....
what kind of oil is it? same BMW Castrol 5w30 as the Gas models? |

My car is according to BMW and Castrol supposed to take 0w-30 castrol edge titanium, a real high quality oil.
Probably because I live in such a cold climate where temps sometime drop to -30 c. Mine took 5.2 litres pretty much exactly like specified. |

The first oil change shouldn't be too soon. Because the first oil filled by the factory is completely different than the ones in the market. They are meant for breaking in the raw metal. i do mine between 10-15k km, depends on how long the period is. Usually shouldn't be longer than a year. BMW service is too elementary! 30k km for oil and filter. Air filter 60km as well as fuel filter! transmission oil is life time. It also depends the climate and environment. If it 's very dusty or a lot of elements, you should consider too change yours more often. In addition, if you do more city drive, change interval should be shorter.

Be aware that Castrol makes several variations of their Edge motor oil. Be sure it is the one that meets the BMW LL-04 spec. Once my car is out of the free maintenance window I plan on switching to AMSOIL Low Saps European synthetic. Those of you who wish to change your oil every 5000 miles or 8000 km might want to send your oil in for an analysis. You'll be surprised at how much life that oil still has.

If you can feel the grains, your oil filter isn't doing its job. A good oil filter should remove particles down to the microns in size. Small enough that you can't feel them. Why not send a sample of your oil in for testing at 5K miles? They'll tell you exactly how much particulate is in your oil. Why is it that over the road truckers can drive so many miles on a single oil change, but a car engine cannot? I'd expect all that "grain" to sandpaper my engine away after being in my oil for even a few thousand miles.
