why would you mix 0W40 with 5W30 that BMW uses for all their cars ?

I would go with 5W30 ...

because the 0w40 is BMW Longlife 01 certified, and the mobil 1 5w30 is not????

the 0w40 is what mobil 1 calls as "European Formula" its recommend by Mercedes AMG's, Porsche, BMW, etc...

the cheapest place to get engine oil in Canada is at Walmart, get the Castrol 0w30, it should be manufactured in Germany and not USA, but its still bloody $8.xx/litre, but its the closest thing to the BMW engine oil, and its BMW long life certified

It's good to use 0W40 when you are changing oil but not adding a little bit.

You can call BMW and ask them what would be better to add 0W40 or 5W30 ...

+1. The Castrol Edge 0w-30 (BMW LL-01) made in Germany is a true Group IV and V oil compared to the BMW 5w-30 from the dealer which contains Group III dino and can't even be sold as a true synthetic in Europe. Having said that, the BMW 5w-30 (also rebadged Castrol) has shown pretty good used oil analysis results. The 0w-30 is just better oil.

I agree with doba s - a switch should be made at the time of change not when topping off.
