Roof Rack F34 3 series GT

Has anyone found roof attachments for the GT yet? They don't show up through BMW. I've also checked Thule and Yakima and they have nothing listed either. I know they will be available at some point obviously since the attachment points are there, I just haven't been able to find them. I also haven't seen a hitch on one yet? I like to have a hitch to haul bikes as opposed to putting them on the roof.

This site says the F30 rack is the same as the F34. I've been looking myself.

With regards a hitch I specc'd the electric folding one on my F34. It is a thing of beauty - but you can't retro fit it.

Whispbar works perfectly on BMW 335xi GT

Yes, there's an excellent roof rack solution for the 335xi Gran Turismo. Yakima's high-end brand is called "Whispbar". Their system fits perfectly, is low-profile and has very little wind noise (hence the name, I guess).

I called Yakima, Thule and BMW, and all of them said that there wasn't a solution available yet for the 3-Series GT. Strange, for a car that's positioned as an active lifestyle vehicle.

I then called the guys at RackSolid, a specialty store in San Francisco. They sorted it out right away, and installed the entire system for me. Call them at (415) 543-7225 or info@racksolid.com. They've got stores in Berkeley and Los Angeles as well, and I guess they can ship what you need to you.

I tried to attach a few photos of the end product, but somehow I can't upload them at the moment.

No, not factory specced. It's a roof rack made by Whispbar (which is Yakima's high-end brand). But don't call Yakima - they're still trying to figure it out, with their "Fit Department". Call the RackSolid boys in SF or Berkeley, ask for Nick (I think he's the manager of the Berkeley store), as he installed mine last week. It's not custom-made - he simply figured out which model/dimensions work for the 3-Series GT.

I'd be happy to send photos, but for some reason the photo size is too big for uploading. Not sure how to change that.

Hi MJAKSF,
Can you please send me some good pics to my email: pablob@gmx.com
I will be ordering a 335 GT soon! A roof rack is a must for my Mountain bike.

Just test fit a F30 BMW base support system to the F34. All you have to do is loosen the two bottom bolts on the either side of the rail. At that point you can adjust them out or in as needed. Everything was level and fit proper.

Is the bmw base support an easy system to put up & take down and is it durable? I came across some posts indicating that the base support system was problematic?

I also have a 335 GT ordered and would like to find a good bike rack solution for it.

hey netsurf, are you looking to accommodate mountain bikes or road?
My lease will be up soon and I want a roof solution for my GT when it arrives in April.
I've been looking into the 1up roof rail since I currently have the hitch version on my SUV. These things are really good, fast to load and unload your bike and no straps...

1UP:

The other option is the OEM bmw bike carrier, its the same as Thule criterium)
Both solutions are awesome if you don't want to remove the front tire on your bike.

Thule Criterium / OEM BMW

Pablobag - Thanks. I'll take a look at those 2 systems since I'm looking for mountain bike racks.

On a side note I found this hitch system for the GT from bmw...

There is a retrofit part number for the electronic folding hitch. It's not available in the US but it is in Europe.

I have the BMW roof rack - it fits securely and I am able to use the attachments that I used on previous BMW's (ski and snowboard). There is some additional wind noise but otherwise it is fine.

Standard BMW roofrack

I got the standaard BMW roof rack and ordered a (ski) box from a Dutch company. We need the extra space when going on vacation.

The roof rack is solid but can be tricky to setup. You need to adjust the width of the rack to the correct width of your car. Ask help from a friend if you do not want to damage your paint.

The roofrack does generate quite some extra cabin noise.

Wout

I use the Thule Aero bars and 460R foot pack that came on the car we sold. Just needed to buy the fit kit, love the look.

Interesting. Any rough idea how much it would be to install that electric tow ball here in the UK?
