From A 330d xdrive to a 335 d xdrive F31

So on saturday i picked up my new F31 335d
not a massive spec but not bad either.

M sport Plus and Adaptive suspension being the main driver focused options.
It's running on the 19's

The spec is basically the same as my 330d xdrive.

Just a bit of background

I collected my 330d in june it was to replace a pre LCI 535d(E61), and as i left i just could nt help but feel even with the new sports box and N57, it just didnt feel as brutal when it hit peak torque. so when the F31 335d was announced i just had to get one(Not overly keen on the f30 shape TBH)
Ordered in oct and the car was being built 3 days Later!
Lets not talk about the loss on the 330...

Anyway it was a long drive to pick the car up through 2/3 rds motorway and 1/3 rd national speed limit roads, so my mind was quite clear on how the car felt on parking up and getting out for the last time.

After the usual signatures etc and a test drive in the new X5 (for fun) I said goodbye to the 330 and hello to the 335d!

In the first few miles i really tried to capture what the main differences were
so what follows is my initial thoughts during the first ten miles in a new not yet warmed in engine,

::

Low down acceleration is so much more urgent, less accelerator lag, the peak torque band feels much wider and it just pulls like a train, so much so that i completely lots feeling of how fast i was actually going when i got to corners.(not speeding though!! lol)

the steering wheel is slightly different IMO, a bit chunkier than my six month old model. also the steering is heavier to the point of feeling more solid.
Its sitting higher than the 330d did but i am assuming that is down to the springs needing to settle and will balance out over time.
Also the tyres are P zeros and not bridgstone potenzas - these felt great in the wet(iit was pouring down) - the tractoin with the x drive was still amazing even with the increased torque.

All in all the car covers ground seemingly much more quickly and with less effort than the 330, its smoother in terms of the delivery of the power.

Oh, I almost forgot. the engine sounds SO SO much better in this than the 330d. has a low V8 gurgle that sounds like a volcano waiting to go off - it had me giggling like a child(ok so its not an AMG - but for a diesel its a lot better than anything else out there!)

Dont get me wrong i loved my 330 i just love the 335d a little more. its put the smile back on my face again.

Anyone who is a bit concerned about whether to get into a 330 or a 335d
I would definitely suggest the 335d you wont regret it...

Great write up.
I have not heard a 330d, but have to agree with the sound of the 335d, it is amazing and very grin enducing! I keep playing it back in my head, and i'm sure it does sound like an AMG, or a Veryon.....! lol

It would be funny if it was,
Piping a petrol sound through a diesel!!
Hahahaha

kind of like autotune for cars instead of singers...
I think you may be onto something.

I would not be surprised if it was. It is what Audi are doing.
It has defiantly had some harmonic tuning somewhere along the line, be it through the AV or some sort of noise generator ala mk1 Z4.

Thanks for posting - I am so glad I cancelled my 330d order and re-ordered the 335d. Seen so many positive write ups now it's causing me to drool.

Photos please!

i have taken a few people out in it that also drove the 330d
the difference is like night and day.
I never got to try the PPK on the 330d unfortunately

It does seems though, that this forum is strewn with 330d v 335d enthusiasts.

All i can tell you is..

Its just faster......

Andy

I set out a thread to ask about tyre brands on recently delivered 330Ds and 335Ds but no direct takers so far.

Reason was that Potenza S00 series tyres are getting rubbish reviews in 2013 road tests.

However., Pirelli P Zero Nero tyres are getting rave reviews in non runflat guise - I think you might well have scored here! Particularly praised was noise and ride comfort. I presume the runflats are equally good - no reason why not.

PS HOPE MY 335D IN MARCH IS SHOD LIKE YOURS.

Congrats.

Forget the cost, you've got the car you wanted and, frankly, that's all that counts now.

The '35d sounds like a cracking engine. Would have loved one myself but the cost (company car) is simply too high. I'll ignore the apparent chasm of difference between the '35d and the '30d and remember that, after driving a 320d for two years, it will still feel mighty quick

It is so reassuring reading reviews like this, having only driven a 330d. Thanks for a very informed comparison.

Thanks Andy - even more excited now. Always wanted a C63 for the sound, just couldnt justify the fuel tanker cost.

How much did you lose on the 330? Is the 335 really worth the difference?

Been thinking that as well, trading out in the first year is usually financial suicide. Often a heart rather than head decision.

Yes, but I remember you got a good discount for two of the them at the time, if I recall.
