So here's a new source corroborating the bore and stroke, and since they had access to the engineers it certainly lends a lot of credibility. I just wish we could get a direct quote from a BMW source talking about the block and going into specifics about the bore center dimensions and so forth and explaining why they made the decisions they did. It's too bad the author didn't ask about that - I don't think it has occurred to journalists that the new bore size means an entirely new I6 architecture, which is of course huge news, so they aren't digging for details.

I saw this quote though:

"...it had to be the inline six because we could use the existing infrastructure in the plant."

That was very insightful and goes along with my theories.

Very good article and confirms a lot of the info so far. It also seems like the engine response has been a major goal.

Noticed that the turbos spin at up to 200.000 and NEVER below 120.000!!!! If I'm not mistaken, next years F1 engines are not allowed to have the turbo spinning above 150.000rpm....

If they have managed to get the turbos spinning at 120.000rpm at the lowest, then we can expect a new level of response from a production turbo engine!!!

I would suspect there is some valvetronic trickery going on with blow by of induction and exhaust gases-

I can't tell if it's good or bad that they mention the gtr and m4 in the same sentence regarding performance for the price haha

Awesome article! My first thought is to keep re-reading it in case I missed anything lol... So what exactly does 316kw & 500nm translate too? About the same as we have heard from other sources? Also, an 80kg weight loss is a little less that we expected isnt it? Regardless, I have my deposit placed and I cant wait! I wish they would have asked about how closely AY will resemble AD though.

0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds.
At least if my math is right and the "performance" comment can be believed. It says 0 to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds.

Did anyone else notice that they said no sound being piped into the cabin?

... and there are none of the M5's sound effects being pumped through the stereo here.
Perhaps not for the production model? I hope not.

Cheers.

nice to see that the rev-matching downshifts can be switched on/off. I'm leaning more and more towards the manual.

The torque has been 'confirmed' elsewhere at 560Nm. Which is f'n stonking. My X5 diesel is only 40Nm higher. This thing is going to pull like a train.

Agreed. Would be sad to see all those years honing heel/toeing down the drain.

To 430ps (424hp) and 369lb-ft.

The 80kg weight reduction is consistent with other threads. The big question is what is included in those 80kg (CCB, 6MT, etc...)?

True, and remember that BMW has said "significantly more" than 500Nm/369lb.ft. The Sport Auto article mentions 560Nm...

That article also says the car will "weigh less than 1500kg, naturally in the base version".

Whatever is meant by "base version" that is...

My guess is that he is referring to a car with no options (not even DCT).

560nm torque would be ~414 lb/ft

This is a car that demands, to me, a manual transmission unless you live and die by a tenth of a second.

It's going to be so easy and joyous to do long gear pulls. And based upon reviews, it sounds like the 1M transmission being used in the f80 is one of the sweetest BMW has ever deployed....

I liked his comment on AWD, driving emotion and the M3 not developed to be "king of traffic lights"

AWD is good for more than being "king of traffic lights", it also helps out around the track. As the two fastest street legal cars around Nordschleife can attest...

I felt that comment is no less silly than the one made 7 years ago when BMW poo-poo'd the idea of a turbo M3.

I'm guessing this is for MT cars, and DCT will be in the sub 4s.
