My car is a rattlesnake...

Hey guys. I've been getting this strange rattling sound from underneath the car. I can't pinpoint exactly where it is underneath the car but I know it's around the engine area below. It sounds like a metal to metal or a loose bolt kind of sound. I have 67,xxx miles on this car.

The sound is really noticeable during a cold start when rpms are high. Other times I notice the sound is when the car is accelerating or decelerating on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear. However, I can't hear it when my windows are closed.

I'm leaning towards a waste gate rattle but I'm not really 100% sure. Don't know if this is fixable by hand or I would have to take it in to a dealer. Appreciate the help. Thanks fellas.

Here's the video of the sound (cold start):http://youtu.be/V8MhcXf-t6c

Most likely wg rattle. If you search, I think it was mr. 5 that posted a DIY that can some times help eliminate some of the rattle by adjusting the wg actuator rod.

is that a permanent fix or will it eventually start rattling again?

It will always come back. Internally gated turbos are shit.

+1,

you might get rid of it for a long time though.

Mostly temporary as others stated. New turbos is the real solution.

I wouldn't adjust it it should still be under the 82k turbo warranty. Take it by the dealer you may get a set of new turbos for free

New, like a big single, or externally gated twins. Some on the boards have gotten new OEM turbos and the rattle was noticeable immediately! :/

I got new turbos and they continued to rattle at low RPMs. The dealer gave me some excuse about the custom exhaust being made of thinner material and therefore, the sound doesn't get muffled like it would otherwise. &^%# it. I love the car regardless.

However this is just plainly poorly designed wastegate arm. My WRX never did that, and it had an internally gated TD04 and then VF39 turbo.

How difficult would it be to go external gate with the stock turbos? It would be so nice to weld the stock waste gate flaps shut.

Everyday yea...

(you can tune out any overboost btw, just need to fiddle with the turbo dynamics because you will be running a more efficient system)

You do understand the basics of a turbocharger system right?

I'm not entirely convinced that's wastegate rattle. I have wastegate rattle and it has never sounded that bad. My flywheel makes a noise too (which goes away when depressing the clutch obviously), but that is also a different noise. Hard to say without personally listening to it on a lift to isolate the noise. Could be some random bolt that is loose and vibrating against something metallic. :idk:

yeah i might be leaning towards the cat converters. this noise only happened after my injectors failed on me & my car started blowing white smoke out of my exhaust. i was hoping once the injectors were replaced, the noise would be gone. instead, the noise has gotten more vibrant.
