Thumbs up Rusty wheel hubs and calipers - what I did to fix this

Hello forum.

Overall I rate my car very highly. Down Under we get taken advantage of price-wise somewhat and don't get the full use of BMW Apps and similar tech, but otherwise my F30 328i has been "sheer driving pleasure" for the past 14 months of ownership.

However...

The surface rust on the wheel hubs and calipers is a complete eyesore. The first of the attached photo's shows what it looks like currently (~20,000km travelled) so my detailer proposed we go ahead and paint them. I agreed the the following photos show how it went.

Surfaces were prepped and rust scoured off, with a few coats going on followed by a clear coat. Any spray over on the discs was wiped off with preptone.

The results in my mind speak for themselves. I'm very happy with the results, it's come up beautifully. While I went for a colour called "cast iron" (think dark grey) if this was something you did yourself you could go nuts. Given I'm not running the BMW Performance or other track calipers I wasn't interested in a red or other hero colour finish. I also tend opt for subtlety when it comes to styling. Each to their own of course, I'm sure there could be some interesting and stylish designs, as you could colour your calipers one colour and the hubs a second if you so desired.

Anyway, thanks for checking out the thread and the pics. Maybe it'll inspire someone to do something to there's and share it around also.

Lastly, a big shout out to Larry of Show N Go Prestige Car Detailing for the work today - and all the work on my cars over the last 7 years!

WOW! Great restoration! Looks excellent.
However...........it's somewhat disappointing that you would have to do this in the first place. I'm surprised about the rust, especially on the hub.
I assume you first noticed the surface rust on the brake calipers and then investigated further only to find the rust on the hub.
I have blue painted calipers and would be unlikely to notice rust on these, therefore, I would never have thought to check the centre hub for rust.
You've got me concerned now

Thanks guys

The surface rust on the hubs made removing the wheels a pain. Good excuse to give the rims a full clean, they look brand new now.

Looks good. Nice choice on the colour too.

I haven't noticed any rust on my calipers, but my hubs looked exactly the same. I just gave them a good scour and rubbed some anti-seize over them.

Looks great, colour is perfect, very solid looking. I hate seeing rust on the wheels and I now have this ocd habit drying the brake disks with kitchen towels after I wash the alloys to stop surface rust developing! However I noticed rust appearing in the welt between the brake disk and hub (that small area you can see without removing the wheel) so this is probably something I'll need to investigate further.

Nice! I'm looking to do the same, loving the gray color. It's a crime that this even needs to be done, mine started rusting after just a month or so.

Well done. I also compliment you on the color of the calipers.

Thought about this. It's good up to 230F... Wouldn't work for the calipers, but the hubs should be alright

I would happily, but I think the airfare to get here would make it somewhat uneconomical. As a hint, you say color and I say colour

The paint used was VHT Engine Enamel (SP997 Cast Iron and SP145 Clear coat), which I believe you might be able to obtain in the 'States. You could certainly find something similar. It's meant to be good up to 550F/287C.

Thanks for the specific details on the colour it looks like I can purchase at any local auto parts store. Best of luck with your car

I used the POR15 calliper kit on mine it uses brush on technique with self leveling paint as I was afraid of overspray

Yellow calipers look good on AW/MW cars. If I ever optioned (unlikely) the BMW Performance brake kit that's the colour I'd choose.

*sigh* I know right. On a car at this price, for this marque, it's pretty awful.
