New or Same M-DCT for F8x M3/M4?

I've seen conflicting reports as to whether the same M-DCT will or will not carry over from the E9x generation. Any confirmation either way?

Good question and I would also like to know the answer. My strong suspicion is that it will not be the same. After all the DCT in the current car was probably developed around 2006-7. That's a long time in the automobile world.

Assuming they still go with Getrag. The unit that minimally meets the torque requirements of the car is the 7DCI700. It does not list a max rpm but does say "adapted for high speed".

This is the same unit used in the M5 (and probably M6) thus BMW could do better on a higher volume for their cost with this approach.

The unit in the current car is no longer on the Getrag site, the 7DCI600. It was rated for 600 Nm or 442 ft lb. In other words just based on torque and rpm it would be sufficient.

Either way here is to hoping there are far fewer software correctable glitches with the DCT software this time around...

thanks for the research. putting aside the torque/power handling capacity of the existing unit vs. the new unit, I would say that the performance of the current unit doesn't leave much else to be desired. It is such an incredible gearbox, and I'm amazed by how reliable it has proven to be. anything better is simply upside.

my only complaint about the DCT has always been that it's just so damn good it stole me away from the manual box, which is inferior by comparison. I think if the shifting in the new manual is as good as some of the best manuals out there (the box in my 997 comes to mind), I might go back to the 6MT.

Google search suggests the 7dci600 and 700 weigh the same.

I believe BMW said it was a new third generation unit that was more seamless in auto mode etc. (1st and 2nd gen being the E9x and F10 respectively). When I get chance I'll dig that up and see if it had any technical information to go along with the claim.

Agree.

However, there are and have been some software glitches along the way. Delayed upshifts after paddle actuation (very early 2008 problem), the infamous "DCT lag" and the unit can be a bit finicky for a short time when cold. Like everything else with improved hardware and software the new units are simply going to be stellar. Unless of course you remain one of the die hard MT folks.

I thought I read somewhere that it was a new model DCT with an undisclosed weight savings over the prior unit.....

If the DCT weighs the same as current and the manual gets 26 lb lighter, that makes like an 80 lb advantage for the manual, I beleive. Big difference.

If true then 80 lbs is a definite consideration.

But it was mentioned that the new DCT is lighter, so 80 lb advantage the manual won't be. I'd like to know details though.

Cheers.

Do you recall where that was mentioned? Not in the press release.

If it can handle the torque of the F8x motor AND be lighter that would be pretty cool engineering.

I know I saw it somewhere but I'm still looking for it. Stay tuned.

As I said above, I read it somewhere as well. I just don't remember where.
