Watch prices

When does a watch price become silly as in just to much money for the average Joe.

I see people on here spending 80k on cars and think jesus what will that be worth in 3 years ? then think that it must be ok as they are obviously earning a huge salary etc.

Im 50 next year and really want this new 50th anniversary Rolex Daytona and as much as I want it and can both afford and obtain one I am just struggling to justify it.Platinum and it is rumoured to weigh around 280g and very limited availability and nobody would even know what it was unless they really knew watches, so it is a under the radar thing and only would be noticed by a real watch enthusiast. It isnt a blingy thing that screams look at me.

For me over £100 is too much for a watch. Having said that i don't even wear one.

Watches seem to hold their value much better than cars.

Sometime ago I had a Chinese "Replica" Daytona. It was a good replica with Swiss movement and all that Jazz. It looked just like the real thing, time passed at "Roughly" the same rate as in the real world but it cost me the equivalent of 25 quid from the now defunct Shanghai Market.
Would I spend more than #500 on a watch, No... But it depends entirely what you intend to do with it.

Do I sense another watch firesale Paul? How much is one of these bad-boys? If it's affordable, it's what you want, and makes you feel good then I think you'll know you're own limit - it's when you make a post online asking for additional justification that suggests you're somewhere near that limit

It's really rather affordable Roger, at $75,000 it begs the question whether buying just the one would be enough, after all we all have two wrists!

In my mind anything over 5k for a watch is ludicrous, and 75k will feed a large city's population of homeless people for a week. Is your wrist really that hungry?

you only live once OP. If you really want it and can afford it then get it. What else are you going to do with your money...when you die you can't take it with you so enjoy it sensibly while you're alive...and by sensibly I mean spend on things you really want provided you don't compromise your financial position.

This is what I was going to say but I got beaten to it. I don't wear a watch but a couple of my friends bought Breitlings. Cost them over 3k each and it's what made them happy.

I spent my money on expensive hookers cos that's what makes me happy. (Joking)

Are you talking about the light blue face with the brown bezel that is advertised between the Sky F1 programmes? If it is its a stunning watch, but I'm sure it's about £50k, which is a shed load of money. The steel one at £8k will look 95% the same and will only go up in value, although you might have been there done that.

Only you can decide and if you want it go for it!

a regular Daytona has to be some of the safest watch money investment out there; a ltd edition precious metals example can only amplify that.

if it's a special birthday and you have the funds available, do it.

if ever you needed to 'go liquid' you could sell for your cost +15% (min) the next day.

Do it.

Paul you know you can't ask that question even here. There is a lot of watch guys here but you are in a different league. It sounds like you found the limit of acceptance for you personally. The other types of people are either wearing £100 g-shock or 5k sub dates.

You are talking about some serious pieces which you know will loose 20% immediately but kept a lifetime will go up in value especially limited runs.

This watch is super expensive but you have been in the game for years and this seems like it would have a sentimental value and would be an enjoyable way to tie up the funds. The colour of money looks better on your wrist than in the bank.

Watches seem to be your thing, this is the ultimate high. Your post made me laugh. You got all the common sense out of the way and then followed it with specs I just know would make you tingle.

Nobody could put a price on someone else's hobby. It's the enjoyment you get from it not the cost that matters. All providing it doesn't ruin you in the meantime. If that is the case, do it.

Like a car it's cost of ownership in my opinion. Certain luxury goods are a more sensible investment than sticking the money in savings, ISAs, shares etc etc (long term). I bought a watch in a 50% off sale a few months back, hardly wore it and just decided it wasn't for me. I advertised it and sold it for just a couple of quid shy of the RRP.

75k on a watch may seem obscene to most but it's far more obscene to spend that amount on a rapidly depreciating item such as a new car.

Plus one on the hookers.

If I had £75k to spend, it would be on cars though....

But if the OP is into watches and can afford it, well why not?!...

You earnt the money, enjoy it (as long as it won't have an adverse effect on your lifestyle).

You can't take it with you.

I like "opportunity cost". Basically it is what you have to give up in order to buy something. E.g. the new car means you can't afford a foreign holiday this year. So, what do you have to not-buy in order to buy the Rolex? If the answer is "nothing", the watch is free.

This is the one !

I think I may just have to have one , Ref the steel version I have been buying them since 2000 and in different times sold loads and made good money but Rolex over the years has increased supply and the list price form £3670 to the £7950 today , That said I always have a pair unworn brand new in the safe as they are as good as money .

The Platinum one is almost double the weight off Stainless steel version.
