Angry Uneven pavement.... BIG BANG.

So i was driving along on a road in Louisville,KY and I've driven this road 1000 times its just a regular road nothing fancy, well the speed limit is 45 i was going 50. and out of no where when i was crossing a small bridge, well it was like raised a little and i hear a big BANG i freak out pull over and inspect, tire was fine rim seemed fine.. I took a picture of the uneven pavement and am very upset cause now i think there is hidden damage in suspension or something what should i do!? I feel very like, screwed over... lol like how can they have it like that.. i can see they are repaving it but still to leave it like that on a busy road!! WTF here pics

If you have xdrive the stock suspension sucks. I hit the bump stops (when it makes the bang) almost weekly on our crappy road in the north and it's just something to get used to with xdrive. Nothing to worry about.

I would inspect the inner barrel of your wheel... I hate those kind of sharp edge uneven pavement... specially potholes...

Happens to me all the time :/ I live in NJ and there are so many pot holes. A couple days ago i went over a lip just like going around 4. The road was being paved but it was literally like a 2 foot section and i broke my right lower front control arm. just went to bmw and picked up the part to have my buddy fix it for me cause i know bmw will just be way to expensive to fix it. i hate run flats, makes the ride more unenjoyable

Jack up your wheels and spin them gently... Feel and hear for any rattles... Inspect the steering ... Tie rods and control arms

I think you just bottomed the suspension pretty hard. If you bent a wheel, especially a front wheel you'll feel it right off the bat. BMW are highly sensitive to bent rims.

I agree check the inside of the rim, they usually bend first. Also check the Thrust Arms (the suspension strut that comes off the front crossmemeber back to the wheel hub). They have been known to crack and then break in a hard impact with potholes.

Earlier this year, I was driving on river road downtown where it is under I-64, and a big hunk on the expressway fell onto the road. I bent a rim, blew a tire, and cracked my bumper. I submitted a claim for that, but still haven't heard anything on it.

As long as you didn't bend a rim, you're probably ok.

Looks like they are resurfacing the road by grinding off the top 1" of blacktop. I've hit those before and it wakes you up. Even better is after they lay the surface down, they leave manhole covers sitting below grade. I've hit one of those and did bend a wheel.

I hit a deep manhole cover yesterday going around a bend on the highway and heard a big on the front passenger side. I thought the car was out of alignment and I suffered wheel and tire damage. sll seems fine. these cars are well constructed underneath

Looks like pictures from NASA of the moon lol. I had the same thing happen when I was pulling off to the side of the road at the beach. There was about a 2-3 inch drop that I didn't see compared to the high grass and it was LOUD. I checked my wheels and everything was fine.

Do you have 18"?

I think that 225/40 profiles suck. Every mm counts. I am much happier with 225/45/18 (like the F30).

something similar happened to me on the PA turnpike en route to work like 2 months ago. it was one of those expansion joints during repaving and when i hit it, it was so jarring that my water bottle came out of the cupholder on the dash. alignment is fine and everything seems ok, i have a 3 year unlimited alignment plan and i've been meaning to get it checked out,

point of the coolstorybro is that i'm pissed at the DOT or turnpike commission or whoever to leave the road like that and not have it marked off or one lane through that section

Google for "pothole explosion". Someone coined that term for the bang that seems to be associated with our low-profile and RFT suspensions.

With me it was a big bang against the bumper pads. This blew out my drivers side front strut on a small pavement elevation change, it first started leaking then went to crap. Went ahead and replaced both the left and right struts. I stay away from construction zone if all possible now.

Ive successfully sued my region for unkept roads. The pot hole was causes by construction and it bent two of wheels very slightly. So they paid me for the two wheels minus 30% depreciation. Took the 2g and went to wheel repair shop fixed it up for 300 and used the rest for mods. Only has to wait 6 months for payout.

It makes me cringe. I've had two really bad ones. One of them I bent both and cracked one of the front wheels. Another one didn't do any damage but it felt like my teeth cracked!!!

Happens several times a year for me. I had my alignment done a few weeks ago, and the next morning, not even 12 hours after the alignment, I rolled over a train crossing at 30 mph and hit both bump stops, front and rear on the left side.

Lots of frost joints and construction gaps like what the OP took a picture of up north. They'll throw the alignment out, but *knock wood* don't do too much more.

Is this an XI specific issue, or do those with RWD have the same sorts of harsh impacts?
