Yes ive read the HPFP faq's....HPFP question
Weird (maybe) situation lately and ive never heard of this.
Lately if I get on the gas harder in the higher gears 4,5,6 I get hesitation and sputtering then SES light appears. Then follows a rough ride feeling and sounding like im on rumble strips. It goes away when I turn the car off. Back and its clear. This never happens in 1st-3rd on WOT. Took it in thought it was the injectors....they tell me its the HPFP. Im probably wrong, but I thought the HPFP just goes....no real warning. I had no warning of it, no long cranks...nothing. Guess its a good thing I took it in before I was stranded. This has been happening for 4 months or so. Anyone have their HPFP go like this? |

I take it you have no warranty? It could be the HPFP, but then again if you're out of warranty they could be just trying to screw you. You should have the codes pulled at an auto parts store or something and report back.

Are you tuned, or not?
It sounds like misfire issues, to me. The plugs, coils or the HPFP could be at fault. First and foremost, have the codes checked, so that you can see if the DME is detecting any misfires. If it is (and, I think it is), you should change the coils and/or plugs on the offending cylinder(s). After that, if the problem persists, then look to the HPFP. |

report back tomorrow after you've had a chance to drive it under similar conditions that caused the problem

I am NOT tuned. But yes I originally thought it was injectors.
Will do. They said they took it out and got the SES light and the symptoms I experienced, pulled the codes on their diagnosis machine and their going from there. Said they'd road test it when their done, so we'll see tomorrow. |

I had the same issue as you on the my 335xi, I took it in with my CPO coverage. The sputtering is the car actually going to limp mode to protect itself from any further damage. My issue was a bad ignition coil, they replaced it and it ran like a champ. that could be your issue.

if it is the HPFP your covered under warranty, the pump has a 150,000 miles warranty. What ever the issue is, I don't think its too big. Should be an easy fix. Hope it works out for you.

How many miles are on the car. Sounds like gunked up intake valves. If you have over 60k miles and you haven't had the walnut blast you need it. The reason I say that is that your symptom is more pronounced in 4-6 gear when you are getting on it. Does the sputtering seem worse between about 2,500 and 4,000 rpm?

This link http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=walnut+blast shows the problem. Do a search on intake valve cleaning or walnut blast to find the DIY. You can also check this link for a detailed DIY

I agree with Blackhawk36. Let them replace the HPFP if they wish since it under warranty. Find an Indy if the problem persists b/c you may need your valves cleaned. I had a similar problem but it ended up being the injectors. BMW changed all of them and the problem went away. I had my valves walnut blasted before this issue came up. GL !

Picked her up yesterday and had a date night with the wife as previously planned so I couldn't really test her out. I tried but the wife gave me that look. So I didn't.
But this morning however.....I woke up way before her and got to really test her out. FIXED! No more "jumping" or other symptoms as stated before. There still is a sliiiiiight hesitation and slight jump if I get on it hard in 6th, but that's excpected to a degree in 6th. I am still going to do the valve cleaning/walnut blast just to clean them out. I know they need it. The SA even told me he had never seen symptoms like mine due to a failing HPFP. Its been going on for about 4 months now. Glad shes fixed! Thanks all for the cleaning suggestions, im def going to get to it in the next weekend or so. |

False alarm.......3 Days out of the shop, and I get the SES light and same symptoms again. I went 3 days without it, and I wasn't really trying to trigger it today but I got it. Granit, its hard to get to come on, and its not quite as jumpy/shaky, but either way they didn't fix it. If you pull the codes how can you NOT fix exactly what's wrong with it?? Just irritated! Taking her BACK in Wednesday.

Either this dealership is pulling my leg, or something is really going on with my car. Took it in back in September for the injectors needing to be replaced, well that ffixed the sputtering, hesitating, jerky car symptoms. But now im having the same exact symptoms 3 months later, maybe a little worse. Is it possible that I have other injectors that need to be replaced? They only replaced 3 and 6. I cant imagine that me being at 6,000 miles for a oil change (usually on go 5,000) is causing this. Anyone?
