F80 M3 or M4 Gran Coupe?

I'm definitely part of the group of current E9x owners who love the looks of the new M3/M4. Since I have kids, I'm thinking of either the new M3 sedan or waiting for the new M4 Gran Coupe to be released, and then deciding at that point which one I'd rather have. (Still literally look forward to driving my E93 every day - just plan to keep it long term as a weekend car as it is fully paid off, then use the M3 or M4 GC as my DD).

SO - out of curiosity - for those interested in either of the 4-door iterations of the F8x generation M3/M4 - which one are you leaning towards? When do people predict the M4 GC might start deliveries (whether in Europe or NA)?

M4 Gran Coupe without hesitation. In an other thread someone posted a side profile comparison of the M3 and M4. With a little imagination you could see how the sleekier M4GC will look like. A lot sportier apearance!

M4 gran coupe for sure. Also, by the time the m4 gran coupe comes out, the kinks may be worked out of the m4 coupe and the m3 sedan, so hopefully any potential kinks in the GC will be worked out as well.

hard to say which one to go with since we haven't seen the M4 GC but I can say the spy shots of the new f80M3 look insane!! that car is going to be really sharp when its finally revealed.

In a way it makes sense. With the small premium BMW can charge for an M4 GC it would likely render the M3 irrelevant and could even kill initial sales if a GC was known to be in the pipeline. If it's true it's a pity they didn't spend some more effort on the M3's rear side profile.

It makes sense to me but in the opposite way... the M4 GC would have to be positioned at about $5000 more than the M3 (or $2000 more than the M4), with a minimal increase in standard equipment.

That could make the M4 GC irrelevant in sales.

Agree with you on positioning, equipment, and pricing... the question is.. is that happening with the M6 GC ? That car really does look unique compared to the M5... although on paper, one wouldnt think that would be the case. The styling is the key... which is what Carlos Danger indicated above. I personally would be fine with an M3 sedan. But I think an M4 coupe with lower roof and styling could be a hit as well for some clients looking for a little more exclusivity and an even sportier styling than the M3. I would love to see an M2 gran coupe as well, hopefully after the M2. i can dream..

Although I'm a little surprised and disappointed by that - I do think the M3 sedan looks great - very aggressive (I think the M4 coupe looks great too - but kids just getting too big for a coupe). Oh well - Bring on the next M3 sedan!!

M4 Gran Coupe. The car looks amazing, I can't wait to see them on the road. When my lease is up next year, I may consider getting one.

Logic outcome since we haven't seen any test mules so far, yet the convertible has been spotted multiple times. Really disapointing actually..

We are not talking any more about the $60-$70,000 bracket, in $5000 chunks. The M6 GC is in the $100,000+ bracket and $12,000 more than the M5. Different animals, inside and out. That's one thing.

The other thing is even more obvious: the problem with the M3, M4, and a possible M4 GC is that BMW made the mistake (IMO) of fundamentally not making the 4-Series distinct enough from the 3-Series. Even the interior is the same, for God's sake. You cannot say that between the 5-Series and the 6-Series. The 6-Series shouts at you how different and how far apart is from the 5-Series in everything. And yes, people pay a lot to be different.

So I can see BMW holding the M4 GC a bit just because of positioning -a 428i GC would be on top of a 335i in pricing and a 435i GC would be in 528i territory as well. This strategy of filling any microgap pricing between models can only work so far.

That's very interesting considering there's this recent post from SCOTT26 indicating there will be a M4 GC. Thoughts on SCOTT26's comment Jason?

I'm very interested in a M3 sedan also due to having a wife and 2 kids and thought it may be nice to have an M4 GC. But I would stick with a M3 sedan if the GC can only seat 4 people.

In any case, I expect an M4 GC to cost several thousand more than a M4 coupe - perhaps even pushing on M5 territory. At that point, I'd rather just get an M5.

Could somebody still photoshop one based on the M4, as a consolation?

We don't know if there were plans for an M4 Gran Coupe or what the reasons might be for the decision to not have it, but we're very sure there will be no M4 Gran Coupe. Maybe SCOTT26 can shed some lights on the reasoning.

Best regards,

M3 for sure. If I didn't need the rear headroom I'd get the M4, but there are times when I carry adults in the back for business.

Even if there was an M4 GC, I don't get why anyone would want to pay probably $8k more than M3 just for a different style. The M3 will look incredible on its own and has a pretty spacious interior.

They are very much interested in an M4 Gran Coupe in regards to the same reasons for the existence of an M6 Gran Coupe.
Which against the M5 is more about Performance in an exclusive suit.

But against M5 we have had a delay from the introduction of the M5 to the M6 Gran Coupe of around two and a half years so you looking at a timeframe of under two years before you see an M4 Gran Coupe from the initial Gran Coupe introduction. 4er Gran Coupe will arrive on the market around this time in 2014.

With the arrival of the M6 Gran Coupe which has only been on the market for a few months it is difficult to establish if the car is taking sales from the more established M5. A result will known by this time next year , but BMW like to see new ideas established before pushing ahead with other models.
It gauges the reaction to the initial model to determine if there is demand for existing models.

BMW M will be the opposite bookend to BMWi so there is increased support for further models especially in regards to an increase in M sales in growth markets.
The time period is staggered so that the new M3 and M4 Coupe will have ample opportunity to establish themselves. The M4 Cabrio which is seen testing is still almost a year away as is the BMW X5M.
