Smoke, Catless Downpipes & replacement PCV Valves

Quick question or two if I may.

Having fitted VRSF downpipes I had the odd issue where every now and again(usually after a motorway type run) after re staring the car I've had smoke from both tailpipes for a good few minutes(it eventually goes away and its seems bluey white if you follow me and there's aoil smell for sure) I've got a suspicion that I've got an issue re both the turbo(possibly seals)but this may of been going on for sometimes and was somewhat masked by the then fitted Cats. I've done what I can to keep everything in check by installing a Burger Motorsport Catch can to reduce the known 335i issue re oil consumption which is more of a preventive measure and one of caution.

Therefore once I get the phone call to the warranty company sorted and the downpipes pulled off to check the turbo's, which I'm fully expecting to show signs of a problem these will hopefully get replaced.

The next preventive issue is regarding trhe final part of my question and that's the murky world of the PCV valve. I've read a bit about the standard offering and it seems that Rob Beck in the States offers a quality and a well respected replacement item, but I also noted that over here Forge either direct or through dealers like Turbo Dynamics offer.

Any help, thoughts re any of the above would be very welcome

Thanks for reading
Steve

I've got the Rob Beck PCV valve on my car. I can blow through the standard item half of the time when it seats, so for the cost, it was a no-brainer for me.

I'm running an AR Design OCC, for which I've had to upgrade the hoses as the standard items started weeping oil after a few thousand miles. What do you think of the quality of the hoses with the BMS kit?

I have the RB PCV and bms occ. No problems thus far..

The occ works great - oil in the inlet side and completely dry outlet hose..

For the price you can't really go wrong!

I do not know how i have missed stories re: the PCV... could one of you give me a brief run down of the issue this causes and how the RB PCV Improves on the original?

Huge Thanks

From Rob:

"What the leaky PCV valve means is that when you are in boosted conditions, the "highly" pressurized PCV valve leaks turbocharged pressures into the crankcase. Pending on the condition of your PCV valve, it could leak worse than others. I believe the unit I tested is in very good condition, yet still leaks and therefore I am not impressed.

Also what I have found is that if for some reason your valve cover is loose or has a bad gasket, you also could develop a pressure leak either external to the engine or internal into the crankcase causing further pressurization of the crankcase."

zltm089 - No not related to downpipes or mandatory by any means..

I'm guessing you already know this but will say anyway for the benefit of others - if your turbo seals are bad and causing the smoke, the PCV valve replacement isn't likely to help your problem.

Still a good thing to do as insurance, as you inferred.

Thanks, well I've just ordered a pair so all being well they'll arrive in a week or two.

I'm also going to change the rocker cover gasket as well as this has just started to weep oil meaning that the gasket has come a little dry and crispy. All being well I'll also have the car in the air and the pipes off in the not too distant future looking into the smoke to check for signs of oil leakage from the turbo's, but as I have a vast amount if waste gate rattle going on at the moment chances are they'll be changed once the warranty company are on side.

Pair? Do you mean one of the PCV valves for the internal loop and one of the external check valves?

err no cocked up slightly I think and got 2 PCV valves..... So looks like if I'm right I've gotta spare?

Anyway

[/URL]

As you might be able to see things have moved on a stage, having seen blue like smoke mainly out the rear off side pipe the other day along with a very noticeable oil burning smell I've immediately and rightly pulled the car off the road, the oil residue on the offside rear pipe(as per picture)is as you can see very noticeable, the smoke so I'm told, when I've been followed also comes out the near side pipe, but nothing like the plum of smoke from the offside pipe.

Spoken to the warranty company, cars due to be stripped over the next day or two. While this is going on a small rocker cover gasket leak will also be done the PCV valve purchased will be fitted, I'll also have a look at what residue is laying in the catch can as well.

Shame really but hey that's life, personally I think the issue re the smokes gone on before the does pipes were replaced, chances are they'll of masked the problem.
