What would you get?
Hey guys, been lurking on the forums for some months now, and wanted to get your opinions on what you would buy in my situation.
I'm 20 years old, have owned a G35 coupe for 2 years, and am in college. I am working, and am able to pay off my school. My budget for a car is 26k. I live in chicago, so we have snow, and bad roads. The reason I want to sell my G35 is because there's not many performance mods you can do, and actually gain anything, plus they're getting real affordable and the kids are doing hideous things to them. I love the luxury/sport combo of the car, however and want something similar, but faster. I'm not looking for a super fast car, something comfortable, and fast, and still sporty. I also am leaning more towards a coupe. With that being said, would an e92 335i be good for me? What year with my budget? I love the lci looks, but n55 high mileage? Or n54 low mileage? I'm not looking to modify crazy, or anything. I've only driven auto before so 6at? X drive? Any specific packages? Color? I love coral red interior. Private party? Dealer? Or any other car? Thanks for any input |

i think for you to get any responses, you need to really narrow down your options and what you want. There are too many variables to put together.
an easy answer, but some might disagree. since you have snow would be nice/good to have xdrive on your 335i. i think you will have a larger chance of running into a high milage n54 engine and a low milage n55 engine. or might get lucky and find a low milage n54. and for n54 i think the majority on here recommends the 09-10 models. (hopefully those are the right years) TL;DR narrow down your options and know exactly what car you want to start with. is it going to be a AWD or RWD and what brand. AUDI BMW MERC SUBARU ETC. then i think you'll get some more responses. GL OP.

Get rid of that G35 coupe stat. The E92 will look better, feel better, handle better, and be noticeably faster (in 335I form).
Better be ready for repairs and maintenance though with the 335I. HPFP, turbos, wastegates, injectors, and numerous other things - be prepared for these things to go wrong and out of warranty costs are NOT cheap. You have to pay to play though and these definitely play.

I also came from a G35 - l think you can find a higher mileage 09-10 for that price. Do you own the G35, any positive equity in that you can use?

I bought my '10 e90 335i x drive with 39k miles for 22k. I would say keep looking till you can get a deal like that or close and get that. x drive will be great for the winter and the power is always geat.

The deal above is really a steal, I would not expect that to be the norm. With all that said I would make sure you are coming out of college without any debt. Student loans suck. So as long as those are gone, I would say get a 335i and try to get an MSport.

Yeah you're not gonna have any dough left for modding after buying a 335i so just play it safe and get one with a N55. CPO of course.

Since you list your age, I assume that makes it relevant to the discussion. So, assuming you're working to pay for the car; I would sell the G35 and buy something cheaper. Then reduce my hours at work and enjoy being 20. You've got the rest of your life to be a slave to the man and drive expensive cars. You will also earn more once you are out of college, so you will have more buying power. There are many extremely fun cars that can be had for nearly half the amount you are looking to spend that would allow you to enjoy your youth. E36 m3 and E46m3 are cars to look at if you want to stay in the bmw stable. If having a newish car is important to your image/friends, just remind yourself how much more free time you have to go enjoy what you have. A car is just a car.

With that budget, the fact you are in college, and the weather in Chicago; go get yourself a used Subaru and call it a day. You will have the rest of your life to own the fast, sporty, everything-you-want BMW. Read around the forums about the maintenance issues/costs of these cars, not something you should want to take on at your age or place in life IMO.
