Rear silencer design.

Hi Chaps,
After studying the internals of the rear silencers, and noting, that there is not that much sound deadening, and pipework in there, do we think, that the majority of aftermarket silencers, have anything at all inside them ?. They all seem very similar in sound on soundclips, and im wondering if, all that folks are buying, is an empty canister, albeit a very pretty one, and expensive one ?.

There are pretty dramatic differences in sound character from muffler to muffler, not just decibels. For example, the Eisenmann cans are much larger than stock and shaped differently, which gives a meatier tone.

On the F10 M5 the sound characteristics come from the design of the canister. Eisenmann spent a good amount of time trying different canister shapes until they had the sound that made them the most excited. The Eisenmann Race level has twin straight pipes inside the canister making all of the sound from the canister design. The Sport level has the same canister but with twin perforated pipes.

Right...and this would seem to negate any claims of HP gain as neither the OEM or aftermarket exhausts are at all restrictive. Basically they are all straight pipes.

Thanks chaps for the reply's. I think what ive got in my head, is if most of the aftermarket gear had straight through pipes, inside their silencer cans, then it wouldnt matter what shape the silencer boxes are ?. But i think Nate has answered that with his explanation ?, thankyou, regards, SIMON.

If I recall correctly, I believe the primary reason for the louder exhaust with the Competition Package is reduced silencing material from the standard exhaust.

So whats under that stuff, is there a perforated "Y" or just dead space where the exhaust gasses go to reduce noise then out the hole or holes??

Paul,
Under the sound deadning stuff, there is a Y pipe that has holes in it, that lets the gases flow into this material, to silence the tone of the exhaust. If you could take out this Y pipe, and weld up the holes, or replace it with a solid pipe, then you would have a straight through silencer in theory, thus improving the sound greatly. This is why i was asking the question, because if most of the race aftermarket silencers are just straight through piping, then it wouldnt matter a jot, what shape the silencers themselves are, if you understand me ?.

Thanks Simon,

So other than noise there is little to be gained performance wise from a new pipe. Given that a new pipe will only give + 10bhp or so it's just not worth it cost wise, for me anyway.

Looking at that pic the standard pipe is very good.

Correct. Ive held off from buying an exhaust as of yet, even though i would dearly love one for the noise. I just cant bring myself to part with the thick end of £3k for a pair of silencers, when im sure a straight pipe in the silencers would have the desired effect, just as a lot of M3 owners have done.

I Agreed Simon, lots of money for basically a "straight through Pipe"

These can be made up here in the Uk from stainless at any performance exhaust manufacturers.
OR have the rear boxes modified.
I have gone for the CYBA 90mm Black tips, and may just wire the flaps.

Btw..those Cyba tips are VERY nice quality. Nicer than expected and dealing with him was a true pleasure. Got the Carbon for the F12 and the black for the F10.

Nate, I looked inside my Eisenmann Sport on my F10 M5 and it has 1 perforated and 1 non-perforated pipe per can. Not 2 perforated pipe as you mentioned for the sport.

This is my M6 convertible with exhaust mod. I prefer the oem look, so I decided to bring my car to a special shop, which is established in re-design oem exhaust.

These videos don't do justice the sound. It's awsome, no droning but a lot of "farts" ;-)

Phil,
Do you know what they actually did to the silencers ?. My guess is, they would have removed the top or bottom of the silencer, then either wrapped all, or a certain amount of the baffling holes in the pipes, or, removed the pipes, and replaced them with solid pipes. Would be interesting if you could find out for us ?. Thankyou, regards, SIMON.

Hi Simon,

they open the cans on top and redisigned the piping. They put out the oem silencing material and put in some other (aftermarket) silencing material.
If you put out the oem material and go completly straight piped trough the oem canister, it sounds "tin".

The challenge was: OEM exhaust must sound throatier and meaner with some nice "farts" without droning.

Some other vids:

Likely similar to the comp pak exhaust where they also just rejiggered the internals - pulled sound deadening material etc.

The Phil,
Thanks for the info. I have to say, from the vids, it does sound bang on, not too loud, with some great popping and banging. Im sure they will have wrapped some of the holes on the baffling pipes, to achieve this effect. Have you noticed any drone at all ?, thankyou, Simon.

There's no droning at all. If you drive in lower RPM (1.500 - 2.000). It sounds deep an mean but in the cabin there is no droning.
In higher RPM (4.500 - redline) there's a nice scream and with shifting gears there's a nice crack and pop.

Best regars,
Phil
