Cheaper winter setup?

Just wondering if I could use bmw style 61 which is a staggered set (8x17 , 8.5x17) and put on bridgestone turanzas 225/45/17 all around. Would the tire size fit on the rears? I dont even know if rotating tires would be possible but it would be easier to find the 225/45/17 tire size on craiglist right?!

I really wouldnt suggest putting 225's on an 8.5 rim.

You can do this, but running a square tire setup on a staggered wheel setup will look a little strange, but only to someone looking for it.

I run 225/40/18 on 8.5 x 18's in the winter. There is tiny bit of tire stretch, but it totally fine. It also depends on the tire, some run wide/narrower than others. Do you already have the Turnanza's? They are not very good tires for the winter.

Also, buying used tires off of Craigslist can be somewhat risky. If you do go that route make sure you inspect all four tires very carefully.

Maybe a conti DWS 225/45/17. or a full winter like blizzak bridgestone. it's nice to know a square setup is possible on a stag rims.

Also the stretch wont be as noticeable on 17inch wheel as it is with bigger sizes, because sidewall is thicker.

why not just get square wheels e.g. 157s? That's my winter setup with some Craigslist blizzaks... worked great but damn did the rears wear fast. I'll rotate them this winter and then they'll probably be completely done.

I don't think this would put it past 1%. It would be closer to 0%, no?

Wheel size doesn't affect to that. Only tyre size. He is thinking of 8 and 8.5 wheels with 225/45/17 front and rear. Difference is 0%.

lets say 0% is the 8in rim when you put the same tire on the 8.5in you will be stretching 225 tire in the rear more then front pulling the radial belt closer to the rim decreasing rolling diameter

Maybe, but i doubt that it would affect that much especially between 8 and 8.5 wide wheels. Maybe if your rear wheel would be 9.5 or wider.

225= 22.5cm wide tyre

8 wheel actual width + 1inch overall width of the wheel= 22.5cm

So wheel and tyre have same width.

8.5 wheel actual width + 1inch overall width of the wheel=23.75cm

23.75cm-22.5cm= 1.25cm

1.25cm/2= 0.62cm

So 8.5 wheel is 6mm wider/side, than the tyre.

I actually thought about this when I was stretching some tires, and the reality is is that the height of everything is far less affected than you think, especially if it's nothing extreme. OP should not have a problem with 225 tires all around, but with staggered wheels.
