Downpipes - RR vs UR

I see that the RR downpipes don't have as many welds as the UR ones. I assume that welds are weaker, but at what point would we have to worry about the welds failing? Should only people who track their cars worry about this?

On my turbo s2k I had my turbo manifold/downpipe made by the same fabricator and my manifold cracked twice where it was welded around the wastegate flange, but my downpipe (which also took abuse from some vibrations) never cracked. My point is that downpipes get hot, but not nearly as hot as a manifold, so if the welds are good there should be no problems.

Thumbs up

You shouldn't have to worry about our welds failing. We've been fabricating (welding) products for various cars for almost 2 decades. It's what we do best. We also offer a 5-year warranty against cracks. We offer a warranty like this simply because we don't get returns.

Wow, one score! That's a long time.
Darryl, I took your product (high flow cat DPs) into my work before I installed them and the engineers were absolutely amazed at the quality of the UR downpipes. To put this in perspective, I work at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and the engineers that I talked to work in the mechanical lab dealing with tight specifications on gun gauges. They are extremely anal.

With that said, I just saw the pictures of the RR pipes, and they also look very nice. I really like how they managed to fit the 3" pipes in that tight space. I see it being a little harder for them to attach high flow cats though.

its still complete mandrel bend on the prototype... mandrel bend means the bends are mandrel... the welds on the straight part are nothing to do with mandrel bend.

however the final will be all.

Looks like we can't go wrong with either UR or RR. Since mandrel bends preserve the diameter of the bend, does the UR downpipe also have consistent diameter throughout the pipe using welds?

Definitely. We use casted 304 stainless steel elbows that are 100% true and uniform in diameter throughout.

Here are some pictures I took of the 304 stainless steel bends we use in-house.
