Anything on this car can be coded. So, I am sure you can code the car to start in Eco pro but the car as it comes from BMW will not default to Eco Pro. It defualts to comfort mode.

I think it depends on what I level your car is, but I was able to test coding an Active Hybrid 5 (my wifes car) to default to eco pro mode, and it does work.

The actual code area etc was:

ICM / 3000 / IcmKod_B_InitEco verbaut = default eco pro

As mentioned, If you have that particular code entry on your vehicle, you can code / have it coded to default to eco pro using the above code.

To head off the next question that is (most likely) on peoples minds, I have not seen any way to default to sport mode in any of the coding forums I check.

Confirmed... just tried this on my ActiveHybrid 3 and it works! Starts right up in Eco Pro mode every time.

+1. My button is just about worn off since I immediately double tap it after I hit the start button. My car hasn't seen comfort or sport since the day I picked it up in Munich.

Starting in ECO pro mode can be done one sport-line for sure as I have done it to one of my friends 328s. The word is that it is not possible to code it to start in any other mode or remember the last mode (just for ASS).

It is possible to enable sport + mode in non-sport cars though ;p

It is possible through coding.

As far as I know it is the same as sport mode with the dynamic traction turned on.

However, it looks cool with the plus sign next to sport

Yes. Totally nuts to think of that as a default state.
