Will 2014 4 series suffer "new product defect"?

I've been hearing "first year products" face many defects because it is "first of its kind". I'm thinking of getting the 4 series but that's been worrying me. I know there is 5 year/50,000mi warranty but it will still bother me.
However, 4 series is really based on 3 series sedan... It should be made very similarly to 3 series and BMW should have fixed possible problems right? Should I think the 4 series as the "first year product"?

Cars are cars...is there a chance early ones will have something wrong with them? Absolutely.

Is there an almost equal chance that a late model car will have something wrong with it? Unfortunately yes.

Mechanically most of the things that F30 owners faced on the 2012 models should be resolved, so I wouldn't be that worried about it.

I have a 2012 328i F30, so first year production and I've had little to no problems with it at all. I've been very happy. I wouldn't worry about it, plus you have a great warranty so if anything does go wrong you'll be fine.

I was thinking about this exact question OP. I bought a first year production 2012 F30 two months after they were released. The only issues I've come across were rusty seat frames (which shouldn't be a problem since BMW seems to have resolved this issue) and how some options became standard on the '13 (automatic seats and the lightning option became stand alone for $900 instead of requiring the premium + lightning). These have been sorted out and shouldn't be an issue on the 4. I'm trading my F30 in for the convertible the month it becomes available!

For maximum reliability in a BMW, it's best to buy LCI, and only in the last couple of years of production, and only with an already proven engine.

Examples in support of the above:
- front suspension rework in the first year of E36 production.
- multiple iterations in steering racks of E46.
- widely criticized steering feel of F10, which may be fixed in the upcoming F10 LCI.
- HPFP issues in N54 engine that took about 3 years to solve.

It might. Possibly. But then again, maybe not.

You have a better chance with the for than the 3, BMW F30 platfor m has been on the road almost a year, so most of the bugs have been worked out for the 4 Series.
