Engine Tune Differences?

Hi, I was just looking at the different models offered for F30 and noticed that both the 181 horsepower 320i and the 242 horsepower 328i both are running the same N20 engine. I don't know much about the N20 engine as I currently run an E90's N52, but if it has the same design principles, the engine in both the 328i and 320i would have minimum differences. All the repair manuals specify only the engine model, not the car model for repair/maintenance procedures.

This leads me to the question, what are the differences between the 328i and 320i versions of the N20 engine that leads to a 60 HP increase? Is it just software tuning or actually different hardware? If the differences are minimal, can inexpensive aftermarket parts/upgrades increase the 320i's performance to 328i level? (I'm not talking about replacing headers and running a 75 wet shot)

It's the pistons, exhaust and tune. The 320 only runs a peak of 8psi to the 328s 18psi.

BMS found the 320 put down 183whp and 200'ish tq. They already have it making 267whp 277tq with no hardware changes, just a tune.

Often the cam is milder in the detuned version of the engine. Is the cam the same in this case?

Cams are said to be the same part number. The pistons so far are the only confirmed difference internally.

The part number is decisive.

Thanks!

I just checked BMS's tunes. So for $360 I can have a 320i with the performance of a 328i? I also saw that they are going to get stage 2 tunes with up to 300 HP, that's 335i level.

The BMS site does not list Stage 2's yet, did you get it from their beta program? That's been running for 4 months but still no public availability.

Explain to me how you "killed" a Boxter S, that's E93 M3 level. Also, why would you possibly be proud of yoruself for beating a 6000lb+ Cayenne?

LOL wat do you want me to explain? Killed a boxster s plain and simple. I was really surprised myself but later i checked out the specs it seems the boxster s is only 315hp 0-60 in 5s

Also theres no need for you to feel butt hurt i raped a cayenne it has a 3.6 costs more than twice and shouldve raped a 320

Whoa, calm it.

As for boxter, you're tuned. That makes a difference. maybe he wasn't tryng hard enough. Maybe he didn't care. Heck, my Volvo S70 once beat the snot out of a Lamborghini (obviously because he didn't care about racing). Explain what plain and simple means. Did you burn it? Did you total it? In which way did you kill it? Did you start from a stop? Did you do a roll?

Sounds like you're a typical high teens/low twenties male. Who, for some odd reason, has something to prove. The roads are for driving, not racing. There are other places to race against others -- the drag strip, the track. GO there, and damn near everybody will whip your ass.

And how the fuck does a Cayenne cost twice as much? It's 50k starting price, your starting price is 32k. Pretty sure with your mods you probably have 35k+. No where near twice as much.

Just so you know, a Cayenne's an SUV. It seats 7/8, was made for soccer moms and generally bringing kids around, and was NOT made for performance (not talking about GTS/turbo). It weighs 6000lbs+, and has 300 Hp. Should be obvious why you beat him.

While we're talking about cars twice as much the cost of yours, a used GTR is 70k, a new M3 is 70k, a used 911 GT3 is 70k, a used R8 4.2, a 360cs is probably around 70k...and all those could easily kill you.

As for raping a Cayenne....it must have felt like a one-night stand with the Michelin man.

tldr You aren't the king of the road. You're just some kid with a BMW. (That, assuming from your attitude, that your parents bought for you.) You brag about "raping" cars twice your cars' cost, but you don't realize that there's nothing to be proud of in beating a Cayenne. There are cars twice your cost that will utterly decimate your 320i. Understand?

265-270 bhp and 226 whp. Stage 1 mod can take it to almost 300, that's 335i level with a lighter nose.
