Extended Warrantee?
I just placed my order for an e90 330xi. Very excited!!! After going through all of the paperwork we got to the sticky question of all of the "extras". My question is whether everyone feels that the extended warrantee is worth it? For a paltry ~$3800 (I cannot remember the precise $ amount) I can extend the complete maintenance and warrantee for 2 additional years (6 total) and up to 100k miles. It is can be broken down to about ~$1600 for the extended maintenance and ~$2700 for all other repairs.
It sounds steep to me, but, then again even a simple repair can run into serious charges. worth it????? |

I paid 3000 for extended maintenance and warranty on my 330i. My last car was a 2001 BMW 325Ci, at the time there was only 36K miles or 3 year maintenance. Right before my 36K miles came I decided to pay 6 or 8 hundreds to get my maintenance extended to 50K miles. at 44K miles my 2nd break job was due which could have costed me at least 800 so it paid for the extended maintenance. At 51K miles I had the Inspection 2, which I had to pay for because the maintenance had expired at 50K miles and it costed me 1K. I just sold my car right before the 5 years anniversary with 64K miles on it. If I kept that old car, within a few weeks I would have to pay for an oil service and in a few months another break job. So the extended maintenance pays for itself and some more. The extended warranty i am not sure but I bought it anyway. My last car, I had to spend 400 bucks to replace the Oxygen sensor in the exhaust system. IMO, the extended maintenance is worth it, the extended warranty is optional but it will also increases resale value.

I got 6yrs/100Kmiles at Warantydirect.com for less than $1900 with no deductible.
For extended maintenance, it shouldn't cost a lot since you only have 2 more years with 2 oil changes (~80/each) and no other service. Look at your service manual, what maintenance will be done in last 2 years and calculate the cost to see if extended maintenances worth it. |

Inspection 2 which usually takes place after 50K miles cost around 1K. It's not just 2 more years of oil change there is at least one more brake job. So at the end of year 4 til year 6 you're looking at Inspection 2 plus 1 brake job, one oil change and possibly Inspection 1 after the oil change.

thanks for the advice. I'll check which services are expected during the warrantee period and their cost to see if it's worthwhile. I suspect, however, that the warrantee company has done a similar analysis before they set the price. It's a bit like gambling--and the house ALWAYS wins......

I heard it's cheaper if you buy the extended options when you buy your car but I could be wrong...Unless you like to work on your car or know how to fix it the extended warranty is worth it because everytime the "Check Engine" light goes on, BMW dealer will charge you around $240 just to diagnose the "Check Engine" light.

Extended Warrenty and Maintenance
My last car was a 94 325i. I added up all of the maintenece and service for 100k miles.
When I bought my 06 325xiT I bought the 100K warrenty and maintenence. I figure I will break even at worst and be ahead if something bad happens. If you plan to keep you car it might make sense. |

My dealer offered me the 6/100 for $1500. He said I could come back any time before 4/50 and get it for that price. I'm going to run through year 3 before I decide what I need to do. Since my oil indicator still reads 3/2006 and 15000 even after 8500, I don't know yet.

For your reference, my CA was asking $1,200 for the extended maintenance. He mentioned you have until the end of the 3rd year to purchase the extended maintenance/warranty. Also, you can shop around and buy from any BMW dealer in the country.

There is a lot of misleading information being posted here. Everything I'm about to say applies to the US only (except #1, which probably applies everywhere.)
1) There is no "Inspection II" on an E90. The CBS (condition-based service) computer calls for an inspection approximately every 3 years / 36,000 miles. You can check the due date / remaining mileage for this and other service items in the on-board computer or in iDrive. Engine air filters get replaced at every third oil service. I don't know how much the inspection should cost, but if you are out of the maintenance plan, you can probably find an independent mechanic who specializes in BMWs to perform it for less than it would cost at the dealership. 2) Extended maintenance vs. extended warranty - BMW's extended maintenance plan covers all service called for by the CBS computer plus specific enumerated wear items (such as brake pads and rotors) only. If your sunroof quits working, the extended maintenance plan doesn't pay for it; an extended warranty should (more on that later). If you need an oil service, the extended warranty won't pay for it, but the extended maintenance plan will. 3) Warranty Direct vs. whatever the dealer is offering vs. BMW's Original Owner Protection Plan - some dealers offer a BMW-backed extended warranty that is officially known as the Original Owner Protection Plan (OOPP). This is the only extended warranty I would buy for a BMW. Like other warranties, it does contain exclusions, but it's tailored to the equipment of a BMW better than a generic aftermarket extended warranty. As its name implies, it is only available to the original purchaser of a BMW, but is transferable for a fee. It essentially mirrors the CPO warranty offered on CPO BMWs. It extends the factory warranty to a total of 6 years, 100,000 miles. If memory serves, it costs between $2-3,000. Not all dealers sell the OOPP. Many dealers will be glad to sell you an inferior aftermarket warranty (as their profit margins are higher), and some would even try to tell you it's the official BMW plan. The reason I dislike aftermarket warranties are partly because their exclusions are often overly broad (or, worse, only enumerated items are covered), but mostly because the companies underwriting these warranties could go bust at any time. Several years ago, there was a company called Warranty Gold that was selling aftermarket extended warranties, and this is exactly what happened. Their customers were left with a worthless piece of paper. Think about that before you think you're getting a screaming deal on an extended warranty. 4) When to buy - the dealer wants you to buy the plan NOW because that way they get their money NOW. Even if you have every intention of returning to the dealer to buy the warranty or maintenance plan before the warranty expires, the truth is that many of us will trade in our cars before the expiration of the factory plan. When that happens, the dealer makes no money on an extended warranty. This isn't like insurance--BMW (the company, not the dealer) does not change their price based on how many miles the car has or how many problems you've reported under warranty. The grain of truth is that BMW may increase their plan prices between the time you purchase your car and the time you purchase the warranty. I think this concern is far outweighed by the strong likelihood that the car will be traded in before the warranty expires. The extended warranty will only add value to your car if you're doing a private sale--if you trade it in, the warranty can't be transferred. Even then, you will probably not get back a large portion of what you paid for it. You can buy the warranty and maintenance plan from any dealer who sells them. 5) Tire and wheel protection plan - from what I can tell, these plans are much more liberal with their exclusions, but, the same caveat about underwriting companies applies. Also, they will only pay to replace the damaged tire, so you may end up with one new tire and one half-worn tire on the same axle unless you pay out of pocket for a second tire. 6) In summary, I think that most people would be better served by: a) Deferring until the warranty and maintenance plan is about to expire to make the decision to purchase the OOPP or maintenance plan, b) not purchasing an aftermarket extended warranty, and c) finding a local shop that is willing and able to repair run-flat tires, avoiding driving on a tire with no air pressure if at all possible, and having the tire repaired in the event of a puncture. |

i agree with segfault. why line the dealers pockets with extra cash. skip the warranty until a few years down the road when you know one of two things, a. getting rid of the car (no need for a warranty), or b. keeping it (start looking for a warranty).
save that dam cash and invest it, then use that money in 3 or 4 years as a down payment on a new bimmer or buy the warranty then. no warranty is ever perfect or will ever cover all that you want it to. also check into the car protection plans offered by insurance companies like geico... see if this makes sense to you. happy driving. my 330 is on the way |
