BMW is asking how: Cigarette lighter to remain live.

Maybe I wasn't clear -- yes, I was, but that's not the issue. BMW just called and wondered if I could check the internet to tell them how to keep the cigarette lighter operable when the car is turned off and the keys are out. I asked them if that was an option, because sometimes I like to charge my phone in the car while the car's turned off.
Other BMW's I have driven keep the socket active when the car's off.
They're working on my software update as I write this, and if anyone knows of the lighter solution and can respond quickly so I can let them know, I'd appreciate it.
p.s. service adviser said he spoke to the tech who had no idea what to do about that.

Well, given your writing sample, I can see how your dealership might be confused...

"Maybe I wasn't clear -- yes, I was, but that's not the issue."

"Well, given your writing sample, I can see how your dealership might be confused..."

I do believe that that punctuation is a correct usage of the dash.

I told the adviser, "I want the power in my cigarette lighter to stay on so that I can charge my cell phone when the car's off." My remark about not being clear was sarcasm to what I think should be an obvious concept to a service writer.

I am constantly baffled at how it is people who can't form fully cogent sentences are able to afford BMWs these days. Not that I am a paragon of English writing skills, but Jesus...

I have to admit, I've been amazed myself at times.

Why would BMW call you, shouldn´t BMW call the technician working on your car? That´s usually how it goes. Was this BMW in NJ or Munich by the way?

apparantly he wants to be able to chare his phone while the car if off, and from what i gather in the first post, BMW contacted him asking him to search the internet to figure out the solution to charging the phone while the car is off. the tech cannot figure it out so they are relying on shweitzer to figure it out so they can write it in on a software update.

Exactly. I wasn't clear in my post. It would have been more clear if I had tacked my question onto my prior thread about taking my car in for its software update, but I wanted the title in the thread to be related to BMW's question. Sorry about that. But yeah, my pre-September car is in for its software update, and I wanted to see if they could address the cigarette lighter issue for me. Apparently they don't know how to keep power to the lighter when it's turned off; so they called me to see if one of you guys knew anything about it. When I brought it in, I mentioned that I read this board.

But why would BMW contact you and not the dealer?

It was my BMW dealer service adviser that called me.

My E30 M3, E34 525i, and E53 X5 3.0 all have the lighter working without the key inserted.

And I take full responsibility for it. I was in such a rush to try and get an answer to my question, I slapped together the initial post, confusing and irritating people.
At any rate, no, to my knowledge the dealer has not fixed my lighter so that it would still work once the car is off. I will go over there tomorrow and see if I can do anything about it.
