Why not stop by a dealer? Get it topped off for free. You're gonna have to stop by a place otherwise...

4-yr Maintenance plan will cover oil change as per scheduled interval but not the occasional extra quart your car requests.

Was using Castrol Edge with my E90. Haven't bought any yet for the F30 but would go with same unless I see a reason not to on this forum... 5W30 is the basic OEM oil recommended.

I'd be surprised if your dealer refused to top you off if you are inside your maintenance coverage. Mine wouldn't bat an eye. They even gave me a free low-mileage oil change because I'd had it for a year and still hadn't gone the mileage. I've got about 3,000 miles to go then they said to bring it in and they will change it again.

Low miles oil change is part of the program too. They are not doing anything special. The service goes by miles but is also required under the plan at 1 year as well regardless of miles. On my E90 I never met the mileage but got oil changes once a year anyway well below the miles. It's a win for them since once a year is better than 3 or 4 changes a year. But I did get all services such as brake fluid flush, brakes, wiper blades which pissed me off to since they will only give you wiper blades once a year too regardless of how bad they may get after say 5 months of a harsh winter.

And then they gave you another one after you hit the miles? (Could be only a month or two after your year oil change.)

Our old 5er would always need a top off at some point before its next scheduled service. The dealer we purchased from would send a service vehicle 35 miles to do it for us. There never was a charge.

Your dealer will also give you a free quart to throw in your trunk if you ask.

no. They track everything via computer. When they did the oil change based on time instead of miles they would readjust the mileage after the change for the next service. Which I would not reach that set mileage either.

In addition to its own branded oil, BMW approves of:

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30

Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40

Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30

Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

I was picking up a spare quart for my way out of warranty M Coupe when my service guy walked by and said 'you've got a car under warranty, you don't have to pay for that'. Nice gesture and makes me more likely to stick around.

They specifically told me they were not going readjust the mileage count, but just to bring it in when I hit the miles and they will change it again for free. They recognized that will probably only be in a couple of months but they said that was fine.

I guess that's their call. The dealership I was dealing with did not do that. To tell you the truth I'm alright with it either way since I do not really put a lot of miles on my car. If I were to have 12k miles on the car at 1 year and 3 months later hit 15k, it really wouldn't be worth my time to be bothered changing the oil again.
