Unhappy iDrive will not boot

Have an 07 335i. Over the past couple of months, my iDrive would crash while I was driving it. It would reboot, and come back up. This occurred once every 7-10 days for the last few months.

Yesterday while driving home from work, it crashed again. This time it came up to the "BMW" banner, and stayed there. I turned the car off, and back on. Still just get the BMW banner. I parked it over night, and tried it again this morning, and I still just get the banner screen. I've tried to reset it by pressing the (dvd+eject) + (cd+eject) + (sound knob) to reset idrive, and all I get is the BMW banner.

I have an appointment tomorrow at the dealership to look at it, but it is driving me nuts now. Does anyone have any other idea? I saw a few posts about disconnecting the battery, or pulling the fuse, but I've also seen a few posts about a corrupted boot image. I guess if it's a corrupted boot image, there's not really anything I can do.

Kevin

That's odd. I have never had that happen and this is my 2nd car with iDrive. Sounds like you will need a reinstall of software.

I had something similar where it would freeze or not even come on (boot). I wouldn't do anything if you have an appointment tomorrow. I took mine to the dealer and they did a software update and all is fine. Expect your car to be their for a day or two as these software updates take a long time to do.

I dropped the car off this morning. I was told that this was a known problem, and they did not expect the fix to be available for another month. He said in the interim, that they would "re-program" it today.

The guy receiving the car could not provide any more specific information than that.

Stopped by after work. It was still being "re-programed". Said that they may have to replace the CCC. Not sure what all is involved in that, but some of the things he mentioned was replacing the Nav screen, CD and DVD drives. He said it was the communications center.

Happened to me. Dealer had a log of how many times it had crashed. They replaced the screen.

It locked up one time since then.

iDrive is a work in progress for sure!

I don't understand why they would replace the screen, how is this related to a computer crash?

Stopped by the dealership yesterday after work. They've not been able to make any progress. They are waiting on a response back from BMW to go ahead and replace the CCC. They told me that includes the screen, dvd and cd players.

They did put me in another 335. This one is non-sport, non-idrive with auto. It feels like a completely different car.

My understanding is that the screen actually has some elements of the computer built in to it.

I've had the CCC, screen, CD and DVD drives all replaced because the iDrive wouldn't boot; it wouldn't even try to boot.

I spoke to the SA for a few minutes Friday. He said they have had issues with the fiber optic network that is used in the car. They spent hours tracing wires to find kinks that can cause problems.

I don't know anything at all about the car myself, but I wonder what the reasoning was to use fiber instead of copper.

This is true. However, I've worked on supercomputers that have been listed on http://www.top500.org that still use copper for intra-communications.

Wow... this is all so amazing to me. I just had the software updated on my car less than one month ago... and I only drive this car about 2 or 3 days a week. Today, the iDrive system completely shut down. No nav, no stereo, no nothing. What the hell is that all about? I have tried everything to get it back up and running without success. All I can say is that this forum is a real mind saver. If I didn't realize that others are going through the same exact thing, I would lose my mind. Uggghhhh! Bimmer number 3 though... and won't ever be without one. Live To Drive!!!

YIKES !

Mine has suddenly developed the same problem !

Tried the "3 finger" reboot. Sometimes it works sometimes not. Today I pushed the track up and down switch and it suddenly came to life !

My last 3 minutes in the car and the seat belt chime started chiming and would
not quit.

What the hell is going on ?

I have an appointment tomorrow.

It's starting to sound like getting the most recent update may very well make matters worse.

BTW, is what is the "3 finger" reboot?

Did you, by chance, name your car "Christine"?
