Michelin Pilot Super Sport Alternative

I got them last year. I know people say these are the best you can get, but I think they are kind of too good for me. I have a base 328i, so it is impossible to get the tail out on these...when they do let go, it's chaotic. Steering feel did improve, but it's not alive like in an E46 even with M3 arms. High speed ability is impressive, but not quiet like most people say they are...rough surfaces do send more noise.

I think these tires are too serious for me, my car isn't powerful enough nor I goto track to explore these tires properly.

So, how about an alternative? I do know I want a summer tire. Has anyone compared equivalent Bridgestone's?

Some references to Bridgestone Potenza S-04:

I really liked the Continental DW. Higher Treadware rating, much cheaper. Definately more comfortable and softer around bumps and joints. Doesn't offer as much dry grip but wet traction I'd say this is very close to the PSS (at least for street spirited driving) Good luck!!

xD he asked for something less "fancy". By that he probably meant more comfortable, easier to live with day to day, as well as being more cost effective. The Direzza Star Spec Z1 or ZII (new replacement) is awesome but is probably not what OP is looking for.

To OP, for the money, still take a look at the Continental DW. Performs on par with most less agressive Bridgestone summer tires, offers comfortable ride and more quiet with better Thread wear. Hankook V12 is also one you can look into as the other member suggested, but performance wise it is not up to par with the Continental however, it is also cheaper and will serve your purpose well. I have tried the RE760 before and they are a step down from the oem run flats imo... more comfortable but thats about it. Never tried the S-04 but it seems very promising. Should be slightly more agressive than the Continental but not as good as the PSS. Good Luck!!!

I would recommend Conti DW as well. Decent traction dry, excellent traction wet, pretty quiet, high treadwear rating, couple hundred less than PSS.

I've also tried Sumitomo HTR ZIII. Not bad, particularly if you're looking for low cost and higher treadwear rating. A little noisy compared to Conti DW.

I've had the Conti DW's for the last few years and I just bought a set of Bridgestone S-04's.

The DW's provide a smooth ride, they are relatively cheap and they last a long time BUT they felt too mushy, especially for the first few thousand miles. So I bought a set of S-04's. The feel much better and my car feels planted, but the ride is rougher than the DW's.

I would have bought the Pilot Super Sports if Michelin made them in the sizes I need (225/45/17 and 255/40/17), but the S-04's seem like great tires. They came in 2nd in Car and Driver's and Tirerack's tests of max perf summer tires.

Knowing Bridgestone, I want to say they are quieter than the equal Michelin. But all the ratings say otherwise...Wish I had a way to compare before I buy..

I used the v12 evos on my old daily for a year. For the price, they are a great value.

I have used those as dedicated track and autox tires. As far as dry and wet traction they are actually a bit better than the PSS. HOWEVER, comfort, wear, as well as noise is definitely more. They wear much faster (almost twice as fast). Also, they cost more than the PSS. You initial said you didn't want anything fancy like the PSS, the RE-11 is an upgrade if anything from the PSS.

Just to reiterate, if PSS is too much tire, you DON'T want Star Specs/RE11/AD08/RS3 or anything in that category on Tirerack.

I guess yes and no. It's just PSS's are TOO GOOD! They never brake traction in the rear.. But everything else but that... In the rain, this is my #1 choice. Highspeeds, the same. Wish mixing tires wasn't frown upon so I can have PSS's for front and something slippery in the back

You could try more negative camber in the rear if there's adjustment room. Why get downgrade from such great tires you already invested in?

More negative chamber in the rear would give me more oversteer? I thought it was the other way around...

They would be the best lesser expensive alternatives to the Michelin PSS. I've owned all 4. I currently have the 555's and love them.

It will give less straight line traction, and without an LSD, probably more oversteer in a turn when you put the power down hard.

+1

For a tire with a bit less dry grip, a softer and slightly quieter ride with more wear, check out the Continental Extreme Contact DW.

Yes. More rear (negative) camber will give you less straight line traction because less of the tread will be parallel to the road.
