Is a 4k exhaust system too much???

I really like the GTHAUS's GTC(EV controlled) exhaust system for the F30... but the 4k+, does it really worth it?

Wow...and I thought the exhausts I am looking at are pricey Well, like many things aftermarket, the value is certainly in the eye of the beholder, some people pay 1.5k for a single forged wheel.

IMO a valved exhaust is a little overkill. I was looking into something similar, but I decided the key is to have an exhaust that stays refined during normal driving, but screams when you open it up. Do you really want lots of noise when cruising on the highway or likewise no noise at high RPM?

From my research, this requires well designed resonated downpipes that attenuate noise at low RPM/cruising speed.

NO exhaust is worth $4K on this car, IMO. It's a nice product, but way too expensive, unless money is no object.

It's about percentage. If you have a Lambo LP640 and buy a Tubi exhaust for $4500. I don't see that is wacky.

But on a 3 series, I find that is a bit much.

I have the full GTC EV system with the remote. Yes it's pricey but its damn amazing on the road.

To each their own but I'm very happy with the purchase.

I also like the Akropovic and Eisenmann but they all fall under the same price range.

The M Perf exhaust just didn't sound right for me TBH.

I also don't like the sound of the MPerf exhause. I really LOVE the Akropovic but can't justify almost 10% of the cars cost on exhaust.

It also has to do with the aftermarket pricing available, which I'd assume is a combination of volume and target customer. If you want to upgrade a civic exhaust, you can find something for $500, while on our cars you won't do better than 1-2.5k (S4 is pricier if you want to do it right). Whether or not there is more engineering going into it is debatable, but you get my basic point...

I'll eventually go Milltek catback exhaust with resonated downpipes due to drone issues with DSG. It's throaty and almost sounds like a V8, but it runs around 2.5k parts and I would probably pay someone to do the install.

In the meantime while I spread out the $$, still need to buy wheels + summers and do an xpel ultimate (hating myself for not doing this before), I'm thinking about replacing the stock resonator with a x-pipe after hearing some videos online. Should run about $150 out the door and hold me over.

For that money you can gain much more performance with other mods than just a gain in noise.

A few caveats...

1) material. If its something like titanium and uber light, that alone will dictate a very high price
2) tooling costs and R&D. Many exhausts start with someone elses off the shelf muffler or resonator. Then they just have a guy weld some stainless mandrel bent pipe. Now if the exhaust has a proprietary muffler designed just for that application and has guys making CAD files in Solidworks and rapid prototyping on a CNC machine and 6 months of R&D, well yeah, it will be price accordingly.

But a lot of times things cost a silly amount for what is invested.

At previous jobs, a $10 retail item had a landed cost of goods of $1-2. .50 cents was packaging, .20 cents freight, some for royalties, when you got down to it, the product itself was maybe .40 cents. So customer, after spending $10 for a product and throwing away the box, you have 40 cents dedicated in the product itself after retailers got their markup.

A source told me BMW pays $7-11 for ALL the speakers in their typical HK setup in an average production car.

if you're going to be interested in insuring your exhaust, it's too expensive

I have been looking at the Akrapovic exhaust as it seems like a very high quality item. The M performance exhaust is probably the cheapest option but certainly isn't really much of an improvement over the standard exhaust.

I guess with all consumer items - if it is worth it to you - then the price is okay.

Other factors to consider when putting additional money into your ride is how long you think you will keep it and how much do you use it. If you keep your car for 7 to 10 years and drive it 12k to 15k per year, the cost per mile and per year goes down and the purchase decision becomes more rational. But owning these cars isn't a rational decision anyway - a Honda Civic will get you there for a lot less money but you won't have a smile on your face.

Way to much for an exhaust BMW tax is terrible but not as bad as M3 tax I have seen exhausts for 6-11k. Some people have more money then they know what to do with.
