Exclamation Temporary iDrive Malfunction...

This morning my iDrive was working fine... the screen, the radio, everything. I got some coffee then went back home to grab something I forgot. Shut down the car and got back to it within 5 minutes, at which time the screen failed to load, and the radio wouldn't play. Basically iDrive and all its subsystems were non-functional.

It looked like it was trying to boot up. The screen would have that black "off" look (with the back-light still on, similar to when you turn it off) and once in awhile it would go completely white. This went on indefinitely throughout my trip to work. No BMW logo though. I also couldn't turn off/on the radio, or eject either the CD or Nav DVD. The iDrive reset didn't help. I restarted the car a few times to no avail.

So I decided to let it sit when I got to work. By lunch everything was back to normal Not sure what the issue was, doubt it was the weather lol, I mean it wasn't cold or anything and I do live in FL If it happens again I'll have to take it in to service, but for now I'll probably hold off till my next scheduled service and mention it then.

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this? I'm running on the latest s/w update. Before the update my iDrive froze up once and the reset got it back to normal, so no subsequent issues, and probably doesn't "count" since the update was performed.

My guess is that the CCC power supply has a defect.

I got a similar problem. it has happened 2 times.
First time, the Idrive just came back by itself. The second time, I rebooted
and all came back to normal.
It hasn't happened again.

I'll have them check it out next service. Right now, so far, it's been working fine.

It wouldn't let me; the button presses didn't seem to register or trigger anything. Even restarting the car didn't help. Only after I shut the car off and went back to it about 3 hours later was it back to normal.

That happened to me twice. I left the car for several hours and it just came back to life. But both times it happened within about a week, never happened before or after that. I used that as ammo (plus the service bulletin issues) to get my iDrive upgrade. I don't know if that was any benefit to the justification but...I did get my upgrade.

Take it in to the dealership. They'll change the CCC and reload the software. I've had the problem intermittently since last December and I just had my third CCC installed.

I've noticed that the problem will manifest itself if you start the car and then shut it down after only a couple of minutes. It will then boot then next time you start the car if you've left it alone for ten to fifteen minutes. I've not correlated any weather patterns with the problem; it's happened in the snow, the rain, and the sunshine, cold, cool, and warm (hot really isn't an option here unless it's 72° and you're British ).

You mention that the screen goes from black to white and then back to black. You'd probably also note that the green LED next to the SOS button blinks when the screen is white. The whole cycle is about every thirty seconds or so. The BMW three-finger-salute has never worked for me.

Thanks for the info SoYank. Will definitely tell them about it. I didn't notice the SOS button but will look out for it if it reoccurs

It could be something internally of the CCC going into a failsafe. I bet it just needs the Boot File reconstructed.

Since you mentioned this is your third try, I'm wondering what your/BMW's confidence is that the CCC is actually the problem?

This is so discouraging. Mine continues to fail regularly about twice per month.

So far, so good. It's holding up better than CCC #2 which had the same problem the day after I got the car back. As for confidence in current unit, I'll admit I'm less than 100%.

CCC getting replaced

Same problem here. I start the car in the morning then I stop at Starbuck and when I start the car back the NAV and SOUND is gone. The BMW tech guy told me that this module cost around 5K. Right now everything is under waranty, but I will hate to replace this module 5 year later and pay for it.

The car is at the dealer getting the CCC moudle replaced. We will see if my gets fixed.

FWIW I've had the same issue reoccur upto 4 times now, always under the same conditions (quick run, 5 mins in and out to return to the car, and the screen is blank). I haven't tried recreating it on purpose but the conditions are always the same when it occurs.

Oh the only other difference from my OP is that when left alone and I'd return to the car, I'd notice the radio channels are all gone, my iDrive knob spins freely when used (no resistance), and the date is --/--/-- etc. At this point I do the iDrive reset, the system reboots, and all my radio settings and the date are restored correctly.

I'm waiting for my next appt. to get it addressed (under warranty) but in the meantime it's not something I'll make an appt. for alone since everything else is fine.

I keep forgetting to check the SOS button when this does happen, per SoYank's previous post

Any updates to this? I let the dealer know and they said they couldn't diagnose the problem. But it obviously is. I'm trying a second dealership this weekend.

Had my 07 do the same thing at M-Fest in Vegas in March.

Turned out to be some "bistable relay" that was malfunctioning in one
of the junction boxes under the glove box.

They had to replace the whole junction box because the relay is soldered in.

Similar things happened to me before. One time the screen froze while showing the navigation disclaimer, the other time all my IDrive settings (date, time, radio) got reset out of nowhere. Reset fixed it (holding down 2 ejects and the power knob) both times.

Usually reset will not work when the entire system was froze and shut....i mean the system won't boot up at all....

My SA say it might be my phones that corrupted the onboard computer via bluetooth.
