Anyone with O.S. Giken LSD? Need some feedback please
All,
I just got my car back from getting an O.S. Giken installed along with M3 subframe bushings and Delrin differential bushings. The LSD was built by VAC since I had welded ring gear. So I received the whole housing, aka "the pumpkin" already built and assembled from VAC. Therefore, I trust their build. I took a longer drive around the city today and I noticed the following: 1. There is a faint whining noise definitely coming from the differential. Its not there when cruizing. If I accelerate OR decelerate the frequency and the sound level increase or decrease. However, if I cruise at constant rate regardless of the speed, there is no sound. 2. Sometimes when I engage and disengage the clutch, there is a faint "thud" or "thump" sound coming out of the back. Are these symptoms normal? Thanks in advance. Vasil

do you have a manual car? I get that same thud with my wavetrac
you may be getting some trans whine Honestly I don't think anything is wrong with your diff but I would call mike at VAC just to verify. Last edited by tres; 04-25-2013 at 07:28 PM.. |

You are the second person who said the "thud" is inherent to Wavetrac. I am desperately hoping that VAC did not mix up the housings and sent me one with a Wavetrac instead of O.S. Giken.
M3 subframe bushings and Delrin (not solid) diff bushings were installed.

Just wait a bit longer it does have to break in a little as it is a clutch. .. plus your delrin mounts do not help as that will transmit every sound into the cabin

you have the set up as mine in the rear bushing wise. I don't think they did and if they did im sure they would correct it. I think its normal considering your mods. If you're really paranoid drain the diff and remove the cover and check to see if its what you paid for.

I get a thud as well with my 6MT Wavetrac, I think it might be inherent in all aftermarket LSD's.
I know Sikh335i has an OSG diff, you should PM him

Thanks. I will ask him as well. I know AlpinaB3Lux has the exact same lsd as me: the TCD version from OS Giken. I will talk to him too

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=816053 I believe in MT cars clunk happens more.

Guys, you are making me very nervous... I will check over the weekend to see what's the story with the bolts.

Welcome to owning a LSD with delrin bushings. And welcome to owning a clutched LSD. You'll get used to it.

I have the powerflex subframe and diff bushings, its possible that your delrin diff bushings are transmitting the gear whine.
Does it do the thunk thing every time you put it in gear with the clutch in, or does it do it when you start to drive away? |

I have a VAC-built Quaife on an E92 with stock diff bushings and I have a small clunk just from standstill into 1st. Normal.
I would imagine there is more NVH transmission with the stiffer bushings or lockdown kit. (Which is why I didn't put it on my DD) |

there is no NVH with my lock down kit in the least.
