In response to a few questions I received
The pictures do not adequately depict how the rack is secured to the car. Basically the rubber "feet" that you see around the bases serve aerodynamic and cosmetic purposes only. They are merely "boots" around the mounting attachment.
There are actually little plastic slots on the roof of the car that flip up and give you access to a threaded hole. The rack has a piece of hard plastic/rubber that touches the car inside of this slot and a bolt passes through the plastic/rubber "mount". This is where the load is placed on the car. I don't know if you have looked underneath these plastic access doors, but there is not a gloss finish to the paint in there. I would guess it was not clearcoated. I did not see any signs of scratches in these access doors after using this rack for about 10 months (admittedly they would be hard to notice here). As far as the rubber boot that touches the actual roof of the car, I noticed some very fine hazing underneath one of the four boots after 10 months of use. It is not through the paint, but would probably require a wetsanding to remove. I hardly notice it and I am fairly anal about my car. I wash it every weekend. I would guess that this hazing was partially due to the environment that this was used. I was using this as a surfboard rack. I would frequently park the car near sand dunes on windy days to come back and find a thin film of sand on the car. I am guessing that dirt/debris building up under the rubber boots over time combined with ever so slight wind vibration over time lead to the light hazing of the clearcoat. Again, no load or weight bearing force is actually applied to the clearcoated roof, the force is placed inside of the plastic access doors on the roof. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Last edited by dubignon; 04-24-2013 at 03:18 PM.. |
