Shell V-Power Nitro+
The latest fuel (or snake oil depending on how you look at it) from Shell.
http://www.shell.co.uk/gbr/products-...itro-plus.html They are of course careful not to say "will make your car go faster". Also, don't know what premium they'll charge over the cost of standard or the 'ordinary' V-Power (unless they're replacing that with this stuff).

After consistently seeing 380-400 miles estimated from a full tank shortly after I zeroed following the first super fill up this has been 400-430. Also, after achieving up to 36mpg on my commute into work, despite a poor journey with plenty of traffic light stops without the stop/start kicking in this morning I achieved 38mpg for the first time. I'll monitor the rest of this tank to see if it's pure coincidence. Anyone else seen any definite performance and/or economy benefits from super fuels? |

Would be interesting to start a poll on what company everyone uses for fuel....

It did just seem that my car suddenly looked excitable and threw a few more estimated miles on the range when it sniffed the v power ;-)
If my calculations are correct IF I consistently got about 430 miles out of a tank instead of 400 it would be more cost effective buying V Power (134.9 vs 142.9). |

I've always used Texaco Supreme Diesel for this car. I don't know if it gets me any more mpg but it's only an extra 10p per litre so not a huge amount extra for a full tank. With all the extra cleaning properties it contains I'm hoping a little bit of extra care now will save money on repair bills later on down the line. That is of course if I don't get itchy feet too early on

The saving in fuel price per litre was an important part of my petrol versus diesel cost analysis so I don't want to spent over diesel prices for my petrol with no return!

Part of the improvement in fuel consumption may well be down to the warmer weather. I've noticed a 1 mpg improvement over the last couple of week and I run on supermarket fuel as I use 1 - 2 tanks per week of petrol.
The best "independent" test of fuels that I've seen is the 5th Gear test - worth a view if you've not already seen it: This showed a 5 bhp difference between Asda fuel and Shell V Power. |

Shell V-Power Notro+ is 143.9p / litre down here and has replaced the 'old' V-Power it seems. Put a tankful in this morning, not that I'm expecting to feel any difference - it's for its cleaning properties you understand
Never understood how they can get away with charging .9 pence for something, seeing as there's no such thing as .9 of a penny

I also filled up on Friday with Nitro and will put through a couple of tanks before drawing any conclusions. I always use the brim to brim measurement rather than the OBC reading although to be fair, this F30 is the most accurate being only 1.5% optimistic - my E90's all were in the 6-7% range.
My average over the last 6 tanks (one month) on normal supermarket unleaded is 31.85mpg. I'll disregard this tank full as it will be mixed with the remainder of what was left in the tank. The car will also need to adjust to the higher octane rating. |

Anyone who buys this stuff must be MAD.

I've tended when i've had a petrol car to run it in and then once I have a good idea of average mpg i try a super fuel. Some cars i've felt there was no difference, some I genuinely feel there's a slight improvement in mpg and/or performance (my Eos 2.0TFSI seemed to like it). Either way at worst i tend to "treat" the car to a tank every now and then so in my case it's no placebo effect. |

The sheer fact that they now call it 'V-Power Nitro+' seems to suggest that the marketing men are banking on people who don't do their research buying it in the belief it'll magically boost the performance of their car.
But yes I'd agree that for a modern car then anyone expecting any discernible boost in performance is going to be disappointed. I tend to fill up with plain unleaded at whatever gas station is nearest when I think it's getting low, but like some others I do put the occasional tank of 'premium' in primarily for the better cleaning properties. Tbh though, even that's probably a waste if I'm changing the car after 3-4 years. Incidentally, assuming the current price difference is maintained, i.e. supermarket unleaded being 134.9p and Nitro+ being 9p dearer at 143.9, then if you buy 50L per week on average you'll pay an extra £216 a year on fuel.

Funny this as the M5 I got from BMW UK on loan had 95 RON in it, apparently thats ALL they put in any car.
However point being it had a full tank, so I drove it over 500 miles mixed driving as it had 4.5K miles on the clock, it returned 26/28 MPG, as I had to re-fill it on return, I topped it up with the same 95RON, it went like stink NO pinking and I defy anyone to say it lacked power. I change my cars annually so premium fuel needs to show me real results. I bet it would not go any better on 99ron.

I'm lucky that as a perk I generally don't pay for my fuel. In the past I have used V-Power on petrol cars but that's because I've either a) had a remap and been advised to use it or b) run VAG FSI engines which I believe at the time were designed to run on a higher octane rating. In my book diesel is diesel. So long as there are no dead leaves and twigs in it that's good enough for me.
