I dont know how the stick is in a BMW (my car is still on order). But in my old integra, if i was going 65+ mph, first/second gear were locked out so i wouldnt be able to shift into them.
bmw doesnt have this? |

what you describe is in fact a "money shift" - you put it in a lower gear than you meant, causing the engine to over-rev. the damage can be bent pistons etc. however, if you were quick enough to push down the clutchpedal, you might've been lucky. but it does sound like something is warped, esp. if you saw the RPM go to 7500 which mean the clutch must've engaged. i'm sorry for telling you, but i think you was looking for the honest opinion? but the correct opinion is the one you'll get from a mechanic.
bring it to a mechanic and let him look at it good luck!

not quite. OP said he was going from 6th to 4th, but inadvertently threw it into 2nd.

For once I am withholding comment on the reasons why this happened and instead will offer sympathies to the OP.
In the future, you should get more experience operating a MT properly. In the meantime, you might just as well and take it like a man and chalk it up to one of life's cruel lessons. You'll be a better person because of it.

I wonder how warranty will regard this situation? My cousin blew the motor of my aunt's E46 M3, and he did nothing but race one of those pesky at the time Eclipses. He said there was motor oil all over the roadway and he felt sick. But it turned out the 2k1 M3 SMG's had a known issue and the motor was replaced under warranty. Maybe the OP will be as lucky and learn a lesson. Bad situations sometimes do work themselves out and a lesson is learned. GL.

He is the OP.... Anyways, we all do that one point in our career with MT cars. From what i've heard, this car logs over revs, and money shifting can cause tons of damage, depends on how bad it is. Valves could be floating, bent rods, transmission damage, etc... if you don't have mechanical insurance, i suggest get that now, add it to your insurance policy. then wait out a bit then take the car to the dealership and see what they say.

If I'm guessing, you put a valve or two into the pistons. The fact that it cranks is encouraging, but quit doing that. It's the ECU that is most likely shutting it down to keep you from doing further damage.
It's hard to say what the total damage is, or the cost to repair. I'll guess $3k. It's pretty hard for the car to stop you from doing this, as it's a mechanical engagement. I'm kinda surprised that 1 and 2 are not locked out, as many cars I've had do this. But, then again, some didn't. I feel for ya. It's just one of life's cruel lessons. Bet you don't do it again! |

Yeah, it was only like 80 bucks a year to add it to my policy. But it gives me the peace of mind that if i do something like this, i won't have to worry about spending 20 grand on a new engine and transmission. Best thing is, the deductible is set at 250...so that's all you'd pay if you have mechanical damage not covered under warranty.

Sounds like there is a good chance of major damage so be prepared to have this mistake cost you some $$. Yes, it is probably logged and having the "computer" tell them what happened will probably be one of the 1st things BMW does.
The adding mechanical insurance idea is tempting but be careful, if date/time is logged and that info is shared with the insurance company, you'll be adding insurance fraud to your list of problems. Good luck!! |

I would recommend bringing the car to an independant mechanic that specializes in BMWs. The damage isn't covered under warranty and the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg to fix it. If you have insurance for such an event, then you should be covered otherwise you are going to have to pony up.
As for 'making up something to tell the dealer', I would advise against this. One, they will probably catch you because the damage to your engine will not be characteristic of a defective part failure. Furthermore, illegitimate claims against the warranty increase vehicle costs in the future for you and for other enthusiasts. -Adam |

As far as the particular issue in your cousin's case, the engine was made with defective rod bearings, causing oil starvation and engine failure. 2001,2002 and some 2003 M3s were all affected. -Adam |

I don't have anything offer other than man sorry, that sucks. I would feel sick to my stomach too. Thank God this hasn't happend to me in the 15+ years I've been driving MT. Now I'm gonna get the mechanical insurance some people are talking about. Good luck with your situation.

I was thinking about a 6MT.........
To the OP: good luck resolving this issue, keep us posted.
I was thinking about getting a 6MT and I have never owned a MT car, but I can drive it without stalling. Specifically, I do not feel comfortable driving a 6MT very aggressively, but I can get by. Now I am reconsidering my decision after reading this post.....Should I get an slush box? Where can I learn to drive a 6MT better? A class? Quote:
