Question How can I stop the Left Door Mirror from dipping whilst reversing?

How can I prevent the left side door mirror from dipping when I engage reverse?

It's so annoying when I have to reverse into my spot at work. There are no kerbs to deal with just concrete pillars which I cannot see with the dipped left mirror. I could disengage this happening in my GTI with a simple rotary switch by selecting the right hand mirror which would prevent the left hand mirror from dipping whilst reversing. When I wished the left mirror to dip, I just selected the left mirror on the switch when reversing.

No, I don't have surround cameras. Yes, I should have ordered them. I did not as I did not think that reversing a BMW would create such a ridiculous but serious problem. Nearly had a prang due to this today.

Please help.

Flip the mirror selector switch over and it stops the dipping.

I couldn't live without the dip!

Move the control of the mirror to the right one, that should stop it.

And if it makes you feel better i have had a few near misses in the last 2 weeks.. Quite hard to park actually... A very different feeling to parking the 1er... The sensors seem to not go out to the side as much in my mind...

I tried that and it did not work. Really hacked off. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks.

It should work m8.. One side it dips, select the other side and it does not. If its not working then its a warranty job.

The sensors are fine on mine... Just different.. as is the camera! I guess it just gives me a false sense of things..

This is why I didn't spec auto dimming/foldings mirrors. Used to drive me bonkers on my E92. t never returned to the right position afterwards

I always dip the near side mirror when parallel parking to avoid scuffing my 403's on the kerb.

The dipping mirror function is brilliant in my opinion, very useful for parking and easily switched off.

I miss it. I used to have it on my E91.

I wonder if it can be coded... Anyone know?

Not sure if this is resolved yet or not, but to clarify what's been said above you need to flip the switch to the passenger mirror control. Then it won't dip anymore.

It depends on the what type of parking you're doing. Reverse parallel parking = want dip. Reversing into garage or into tight carpark spot = no dip.

I thought it was together with the memory seats rather than folding mirrors. I have both on the E61 so don't know which option 'included' it.

I have the dipping mirror but not memory seats so it must come with the folding mirrors option.

I noticed the black dot on the side when you posted a picture of your wheel.

That's probably the only option I originally specced for but didn't make the cut for final selection.

I suppose I should count myself lucky when that's the only thing I wanted and didn't get.

A heavily loaded 3 Series will always look a bit grim when reselling as regards what you get for it, on a car such as that you need to regard the extras as for your use only and you pay as such.

Nothing wrong with a few options but loading up a 3 series will mean a decent amount of lost cash but if you enjoy the options thats the key.

The way the configurators show it it's not just 3 series - even the 5 is v v light on extras. So much so that the folding mirrors aren't part of standard 530d m sport trim. At least heated front seats are and parking sensors. But the good stuff like vis pack, navigation are still all optioned. to be fair though BMW are giving free prof nav upgrades...
