Brake options on the F30

Hi looking to buy an ex-demo type 6 month old F30, found a nice one but it doesn't have the M Sport brakes on it - are these any good and can I get them retro-fitted etc? My current BMW has the yellow BMW BBK - I take it they are not as good as these?

Steve.

Are they any good....?

Can of worms this one mate.

I've got them.

There will be 2 sides to this.

1. Better and more positive feel when you apply the brakes.
2. Doesn't actually stop you any sooner than the standard brakes.

There seem to be more folk complaining of brake squeal with the M Sport (Brembo) brakes. I quite fancy them, but the options have to stop somewhere and I figure I'm moving to a pipe-n-slippers mobile, so the standard brakes should do me fine.

To me, the only options that REALLY matter - Sport Auto, Visibility Pack, H/K Speakers. Everything else is a bonus.

Hang on - I thought there were 3 types of brakes: standard, M Sport standard (standard with M Sport trim) and then the M Sport extra option?

Or is there only 2? In which case is there any squeak/dirt issues with the standard one?

I thought there were only two factory options (standard and M Sport) and one dealer option (M Performance)?

...and yes I have the standard stoppers and my rear off/side is squealing like a pig. (Will tell them when it goes in for it's gearbox)

Two options plus dealer fit M Performance one's , where did you get the info re squeal from uptated M Sport braking i think it's the standard one's, that they have been having this issue with as far as im aware

There's oodles of posts on the forum in general. This poll suggests more folk have squeal issues with M Sport brakes than regular brakes.

Are they not referring to the different disk size on m sport 6 cylinder models and smaller disks I think may be wrong as different brakes over pond

This poll was started by someone in the US....they don't get the option to spec M Sport brakes (2NH)

Plus it seems many just don't get High performance brakes.

What do M Sports brakes give?
  1. Slightly lighter unsprung weight
  2. Calipers that look cool, and stay looking cool longer
  3. More braking force for a set pedal pressure
  4. More expensive brake replacements (although not sure if the wear rate is same as standard)

My view, is if you like big brakes, then they are a flippin cheap upgrade option, if you're not into brakes, you won't miss what you don't know.

The M brakes are better on the 18s as they are easily visible!

(Off to go hide in a bunker as I may have started off another 18 vs 19 debate)

Hi, sorry for delayed reply. Almost 900 miles on the clock now (it's actually been a period of low mileage for me this, with mainly just my normal office commute). Not tried the Pro Nav out on a long route yet.

Overall i'd have to say yes, i'm delighted with the car.

+ points:
8AT gearbox is wonderful

Engine is smooth and power delivery excellent. I've stayed in comfort mode almost exclusively (surprised myself with that) and performance is more than sufficient. A mere flick of the switch into sport mode for a blast or to overtake!

<Apologies to OP for off topic>

H/K sound is fantastic

DAB is great (despite some reports to the contrary)

Adaptive Xenon's are amazing (like a full blown disco)

- points:
Fuel economy not yet quite what hoped (averaging ~32mpg on my commute, had budgeted on what believed was a conservative 34mpg). Is improving though - warmer weather, driving style etc and on the one longer run i did i got 40+

Suspension is probably a bit softer than i'd have liked. The M sports suspension debate on xDrive was ongoing when I placed my order. Is it the 10mm ride height that's affected it? Would I have had a firmer set-up going for adaptive suspension or is it at it's firmest anyway in the xDrive?

Checked out the tyre prices - £250 each rear, £180 front (ouch!)

Am I happy with my decision though - yes!

Cheers.

Just done 850 miles in mine today. Thought my average MPG was low at 43! Was getting more in my E92 though early days yet. I've kept mine in comfort pretty much and dropped in ECO Pro around town and actually quite like it! Ready for 1k miles so I can notch it up into sport!

I've found the suspension very soft compared to my E92 but not in a bad way; I'm actually quite liking thw smoothmess of the ride. I'm assuming your running 18's as the tyre prices for mine are alot greater than your quoting!

Happy motoring.......
