Steering: Standard, Servotronic, Variable Sport
Am I correct with the following:
Standard Steering and Servotronic Steering: 2.75 turns lock to lock. Variable Sport Steering: 2.2 turns lock to lock. (Corrected from 2 to 2.2). Standard Steering: Constant asistance independent of speed. Servotronic Steering: More assistance at low speeds and less at high speeds. Variable Sport Steering: Includes Servotronic plus a faster rack depending on wheel angle. All three types are dependent on which Driving Mode is selected: that is, for example, heavier in Sport than in Comfort. Or, is Standard Steering not synchronised with the Driving Mode producing constant assistance whatever the speed or Driving Mode? Thanks

It might help if you indicated which option you think is 2.2 turns....

its the number of turns of the steering wheel to go from lock to lock, the lower the ratio the quicker the steering will feel, it was one of the first things we used to do to an old mk2 escort for rallying, made it easier to catch the tail slide, the downside is it makes it nervous and twitchy

Can someone answer this from my original post, please:
'Or, is Standard Steering not synchronised with the Driving Mode producing constant assistance whatever the speed or Driving Mode?' Thanks PS: I've got Servotronic Steering, which is standard with my M Sport.

I understand VSS to not just be 2.2 lock to lock but a variable ratio not just variable assistance. It may take 2.2 turns to go full lock but the initial portion of travel is closer to 2.7 such that in comfort mode the car feels very similar to servo. It's sharper ratios further through the turn, netting out to 2.2 lock to lock, and obviously somewhat firmer and sharper than servo in sport mode. I don't think it's ever a linear 2.2 as that'd be twitchy.

Think you're right there. A quote from the BMW website about Sport+ says "If Variable Sport Steering is chosen, the assistance from power steering is reduced (in Sport+ mode), which ensures a more direct feeling of steering control."

Will you have a chance to compare VSS vs Servotronic Steering at some stage? BTW, when is your ETA? You're forgiven.

Any further comments/reviews of the VSS now that many more people have F30's? I'm keen to know whether it enhances the fun and feel over servotronic when having a spirited drive? Not sure I'm too fussed about parking agility!

I'd also like to hear what anyone thinks about VSS. I added it because i though hmm, £250, thats cheap for a sexy sounding option. ( 335d arriving week 51 fingers crossed)

Drove a 330d M Sport with VSS last week for around an hour. Did not like it at all as the steering had absolutely no feel whatsoever (even less than the Servotronic) and felt very odd, something I just would not want to get used to.
Autocar review of 435i M Sport with VSS: One option to avoid is the Variable Sport Steering, which dials the 4 Series' rack to just 2.2 turns between locks, but relies on greater power assistance to keep the effort levels sensible. You get a less feelsome, less predictable steering rack on your 4 Series if you go for it - albeit one that masks understeer quite effectively at normal speeds. Anyway, look at it this way: it's only a £250 option (or mistake) which you might have to grow to like and to get used to. I rather have the lumbar support option than VSS. ETTO.

Interesting that Autocar suggests that it masks understeer at normal speeds... at normal speeds one shouldn't be getting understeer! But this is one of the reasons I can see it helps. We're getting a 335d, so with the xdrive and the heavy engine, my thinking is that the VSS will help to mitigate the likely nose heavy nature of the car. Has anyone been able to discern much difference between sdrive and xdrive cars in terms of steering feel? |
