Anyone with 20" Wheels want to comment on ride quality?

Apologies in advance but I searched (manually) through several pages to see if there is this exact same topic floating around out there. Plus the search feature did not take too kindly to "20".

Anyway, I opted for stock 18" M wheels when I ordered my car with the full intention of upgrading to aftermarket 19" or 20". I just wasn't a fan of the 403M 19"s.

So...are there any members out there with 20" wheels that would like to provide their perspective on ride quality?

I also plan on installing the M Performance Suspension Kit.

Imho, go with 19" if you want a good compromise between performance, comfort and looks. With 20" wheels you are most likely have to run either 35 or 30 profile tires; while the car will look good, and F30 with 20" sure looks nice, but the ride quality is pretty much dissapear.. cmiiw

I have 285's in the rear and had to go with 25's...super low profile...not as comfortable as I'd like but not horrible either.

I have 20's too with 25-profile rears. Of course they give a harsher ride than 19's but the F30 has such good comfort compared to older 3-series cars that it is fine for most anyway. My F30 on 20's is comparable to the E9x on stock 19's RFT.

Maz335i above tells the truth.

I bought a slightly used f30 that had OEM 20s on it. It was my first time running 20s and I was slightly nervous about the purchase. But I gotta say I am shocked and impressed with how good the ride quality and damping is on the car. This is also with the m adaptive suspension, so I have the option of comfort mode. I can't speak for a fixed sports suspension. I actually prefer my ride to a friends Mercedes CLS on 19s. With that said I am still concerned with damaging the rim via a bad pothole and/or the occasional curb rash. But that is my largest concern (damage). I personally wouldn't put ride comfort as a worry.

Check out my thread (to be updated) on 20" rim information: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=807225

Long story short - my car came with OEM 20's. All I did was testdrive on those (30 series) though as the dealer wanted $3600 for the setup. Since then I've tried to pull information on tire sizing for 20's but it's been extremely silent everywhere around here. I hooked up with Forgeline Rims for some 100% custom ones and they should be here shortly. 275-30/20's going in the rear. I couldn't bring myself to run a 25 series. I'll post pics/info/impression in the above thread when they arrive.

It really depends on the width/offsets of the wheels. That 275/30/20 might be too much. Its ~1" taller than a 285/25/20.

Using a Michelin Pilot Super Sport as an example....
275/30/20 has a total diameter of 26.5"
vs.
285/25/20 has a total diameter of 25.6"

If clearance is tight, you could be in trouble. I ordered 20x10.5 +45 rear wheels and asked about a 275/30/20 and was told it would most likely rub, whereas a 285/25/20 would not.

Interesting the 18" OEM wheels are 26" in diameter. It looks like there is at least 0.5" of available clearance. I think someone is running 265/35/19s without rubbing on this forum (which was my plan). That's a bit over 26"s (I forget the exact but probably just shy of 26.5.

I just swapped over to an oem 405m setup at the same time as I installed the m-perf brake kit. I have some significant car vibration now. It is different than increased road feel from the wheels or tires. I also just had them balanced.

You also have to take into consideration the width and offset. If you push the wheel out towards the fender or in towards the strut you may run into clearance issues with the taller tire when the suspension compresses.

I hope it works for you. The extra sidewall would help the ride quality. I just tend to be a little more cautious in regards to rubbing.

I'm runnin this setup and looks great(imho) and seems to ride fine
but am certainly not the best judge as I am a complete newb to
this world.

20" Double Spoke 361 Ferric Grey.
20" Alloy Wheels
Pirelli P Zero Run-flat
225/35R20 Y, Front
255/30R20 Y, Rear

Also had H&R sport springs put on which closes the gap and makes
it look particularly nice.

I have the 401 19" and put the 20" 361 ferric grey on for a few miles(like 60) and no noticeable difference and the 19's feel smooth to me.Besides the $4300 msrp lol.
