Welp! Think I just blew a turbo...

So just got done with a soccer game tonight. On my way home, driving like a grandpa since it's late and I'm tired.

I give it a little gas, revs up to maybe 2800rpm and suddenly I hear a poof sound, then a short whirl sound followed by deceleration and "Engine malfunction! Reduced Power!"

Gave it a little gas again and sure enough, I have less horses!
No smoke from engine or tail pipes, no harsh idle or engine stutter.

Only noticeable thing is the car is quite a bit louder and has reduced power.

Only thing I can think of is I blew a Turbo! Any other thing it could be that I might be missing?
Checked the engine bay and nothing is leaking.

Going straight to the dealer tomorrow morning.

No smoke? I'd think a blown turbo would have more smoke, but I could be wrong.

Does it get noisier the more you apply the throttle? Does the noise increase with the RPMs?

Yup several times with the same result. Once I hit the gas the warning came right back up.

No smoke but yes, it gets pretty darn loud when the RPM's increase. Way louder than before.

Good call on that one.

Just checked it and sure enough it LITTERALLY blew right off. Top connecting part looks like it exploded and half of it is missing!! I even found a random cap sitting under the hood. No clue where it goes.

That's actually pretty bad. What in the hell could have caused that?

100% stock. I haven't ever put a tune on it. No mods what-so-ever save for some external cosmetic ones.

That's why I'm so baffled. I took another look I'm just at a loss to explain how the top connector piece literally exploded. The whole back half of it is no where to be found.

Bet oil contamination softening the pipe rubber, leading to a rupture under pressure.
Oil comes from the PCV system on our 335s.

dealer should cover that no prob. It's a piece of plastic anyway. Changing it to an after market one would help but since your probably under warranty seeing you have a 2010, just call them asap!

Yea. Thanks for the help. It's still under the 4yr / 50k manufacturers warranty but still didn't think a pipe would explode.

I took some pics - tried to get the best angle I could. The screw holding the plastic mounting lip is just totally missing and the actual mount is broken.

You can't see it in the other picture but the back half of the pipe is broken off. I could feel it with my hand when reaching back.

Crazy....

Normally it takes some extra boost from a tune to do this.... I noticed you said it's stock. Dealer should cover it.

N55 chargepipes suck a little more than N54 chargepipes. OP's broke under stock boost, some people have theirs holding up to 19psi no problem. It's a flip of the coin if you're boosting much over stock (8-9psi), and even at stock boost levels it can happen as we just saw. Replace it.

Most likely a defect not detectable by visual inspection. Anything made using plastic can have an occassional void, same with rubber which will eventually fail. Pretty rare and yes your dealer will take care of this and most likely send the part back to Germany for analysis...

It's why all aftermarket charge pipes are metal...the genius that thought it should be plastic should be shot.
