Noisy brakes
I have done 600 miles in my 13 reg F31 Msport and notice two separate issues with the brakes. The pedal itself makes a creaking noise when depressed and the brakes squeak loudly when braking at low speeds (typically under 20mph) which is noisy in slow traffic. Am waiting for the dealer to call me back but wondered if anyone else had experienced the same. I have the standard F30/31 braking system.
UPDATE: Been to dealer and mostly resolved - see my last post Last edited by badger76; 03-28-2013 at 09:52 AM.. Reason: Have had work done on car |

MSport brakes squeal. Mine does a bit at low speeds too. Some say the squealing decreases after some mileage. I have under 2K and haven't seen much change. Do some searching here, you'll find plenty on squealing MSport brakes.
BTW, some have had luck after dealer chamfers the edge of the pads. I decided against this temporary fix. No way this can be a permanent fix b/c as pads wear so will the chamfered edge. As far the creaky pedal, I had a similar issue with my 2010 E90. Dealer resolved it by trimming away a small amount of the foam surrounding it. I think it was where the pedal went through the under dash panel, however it could have been where it went through the firewall. Don't recall exactly. In my case the shop foreman knew exactly what to do when he heard the noise. Maybe its same on F30?

No noisy pedal but my brakes have squealed/squeaked since day one. The dealer was supposed to have fixed it when it went in a few weeks ago but 1200 miles and they're still squeaking.

My E61 brakes started squealing about 2 years ago. The dealer said there might be a stone chip or something foreign in there somewhere (I know - lie detector was going nuts in my head), but wouldn't investigate unless they charged me for it (even under warranty!) I've had the front and rear discs and pads changed now but still squeals.... Good news is that with a tad bit of radio on and windows up, I can't hear it at all
Sounds like good preparation for the F31...

Yep same here, I have the auto in the F30 and the brakes definately do sweal at lower speeds, more when the car is coming towards a standing halt. I thought it might be the fact its an auto and that the brake pedal is used constantly whilst travelling.

You would have thought they would have bedded in before 4K
I haven't even got mine yet, Thursday by the way Not happy if i have to live with noisy brakes for a few thousand miles. I can handle the brake dust, not the noise though. Hopefully mine are ok, but not holding much hope. |

For anyone suffering with squeal, might be worth trying the pad bed in procedure. Doesn't always work on already glazed pads, but worth a try???? I have M Sport brakes and not a squeal ever. I did bed the pads in when new. |

Nice video NISFAN - I found it also linked from here: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=766693 when I googled 'bedding in'. Does bedding it in like they say reduce the lifespan of the brake pads/discs? I'd like to try it if it's not too detrimental to lifespan...

4-5 stops from 60ish in a short period of time. They won't be smoking like the video, although you should get that burnt resin smell. Regarding reduced life.....well, perhaps it will shorten the life by a minimal amount, but surely worth it to have brakes with lots of bite and no squeal??? IMO if you are getting squeal, you are not using the brakes correctly in the first place, to the point you will get less life out of them. |

Also - once you do it, do you need to do it again? Does the burn-on then wear down after a while?

Too true. Yes, those baggy Hippo Hide Seats which I had to pay for to get sorted as BMW showed no customer care by being too mean to contribute and provide a fix under warranty.

I used to try that after getting new brake pads, but not as many times as described in the video. Don't think i ever had squeeling brakes before on any of my cars. |
