End of iDrive?

I have no idea what to make of this, so here it is from a MacRumors article:

Apple Designing Car Interfaces?

While an earlier report today claimed that Volkswagen and Apple were working on integrating Apple products into future Volkswagen models, reader Chris Bangle notes that Apple may have been working on control interfaces for at least one upcoming luxury car.

they are implying Mercedes not BMW, its been widely known that they have been corroborating together for a while, although they both deny it.

Great article! I have a euro E91 arriving in October and like the look of the new Gen iDrive, particularly favourites.

1 button to navigate home, 1 to call the missus, etc. Superb!

I really enjoyed this article. Is this the type of article I would see in the Roundrel Magazine? If so I'm tempted to join CCA.

JSpira - in the section labeled "iDrive’s three-generation history 2001-2007"

you misspelled past:
newest generation was introduced this pas March.

should be
newest generation was introduced this past March.

Great article btw... I've been looking for a history of the I-Drive for a while

iDrive works just like an iPod, actually even better

i just wish bmw will let us install widget or apps in the future

i would love to have a taxi fare style app in my car, so when my friend's ride my car i can tell them how much it would cost if this was a taxi, or what about an app to view engine data? that would be sweet and also a datalogger.

also, for track days, the screen display the layout of the track with car position and nearby cars with GPS and keep track of laptimes (similar to what porsche's sports chrono does to some extend). this would be similar to GT4's HUD

one thing i dont understand. why is the processor so slow on the iDrive?
would it be cost issue? i'm sure modern PPC and UMPC processors are by far faster then what we have now. also, nav is at least a $2000 option. i'm sure 2k can buy the fastest mobile processor along with internal SSD drive and a 8" LCD
