Extended Warranty on 335i I just bought?

As mentioned in my previous post, I just bought a '07 335i E90 with 53k miles with two previous owners. The car drives perfectly great now but I'm debating if I should get an extended warranty from Route 66 offered by my credit union. It costs $1900 to cover it up to 10 year or 100,000 miles.

I know some parts are already covered by BMW recall and extended warranty, but as I read through the service records by previous owners, the car has been to the dealership to replace high pressure pump, vanos solenoid valve, and leaking mechatronics sleeve, which cost thousand of dollars if not under warranty.

I think some very common problems yet to happen include water pump, injectors, coilpacks, etc... but not sure how much they cost so wondering if it's wise to get an aftermarket exclusionary extended warranty on this car?

Anyone with experience or advice please chime in, thanks.

I wouldn't own one without a warranty.

I have exactly same question regarding Route 66 warranty as I got offered to get it for my car. Does it cover any problems?

It looks pretty comprehensive to me. Here is what it says:

WHAT'S COVERED: INCLUDES ALL ITEMS COVERED UNDER THE MANUFACTURER'S ORIGINAL COVERAGE except for those items listed under "Items not covered".

ITEMS NOT COVERED: Any normal maintenance item including tires, wheels, struts, shocks, brake shoes or pads, rotors or drums, belts, hoses, filters, fluids, lubricants, clutch, pressure plate or clutch release bearing, tune-up items. Exhaust or emission parts, electronic equipment including sound reproduction components, wiring harness, telephone, clock, television, navigation equipment. Any body parts, interior parts, trim, glass, paint, air bag system, keyless entry/anti-theft.

I bought an extended one through carchex. Didn't need it yet, but I ran into so many problems at 60k, that I am glad I had it now. I still kick myself for not getting the BMW extended warranty.

If I'm going with the extended warranty, I might not put any mods on the car except a tune. Because if any problems with car and towed to the dealer I don't want them to see the mods and void the extended warranty. I was thinking to get a tune, intake, and downpipe before. Decision decision...

That's a pretty decent price to take it to 10yr/100k... Water pump and injectors will cost more than that alone.

It's a rip off don't buy it. THIS WARRANTY COVERS METAL PARTS ONLY they only break when you crash LOL. It excludes wiring harness LOL everything these days has wiring harnes, and if something breaks they will blame it on wiring LOL. If you want to get warranty GET IT THROUGH BMW ONLY! BMW is more expensive and less miles / years but it covers all that + you can add maintenace to it too. Any other warranty is a ripp off! You pay but when shit breaks you end up paying unless you can prove it. Been there done that. BMW = BMW Warranty only my 2 cents. I was going to buy warranty for my Porsche Cayenne Turbo as well but after reading all the exclusion what does it cover Engine and transmission but not all components and excludes electronics, come on people everything expensive in these cars is controlled by electronics. Go to bavauto for parts genuine bmw parts cheap. I didn't buy extended warranty but I'll take my chances as I do all maintenance my self even engine work so don't really care.

As far as injectors if you have 335i they are covered under recall until 120K miles by BMW along with high pressure fuel pump, i believe fuel rail is included in that too but don't quote me on it. No questions asked will replace it under recall warranty. I got a recall letter in the mail from bmw about that.

Hope this helps.

Ive had the penfed route66 on a previous vehicle and had no problems out of it and it was work done on a c300 and almost 2k in repairs. I will get it for my 1series when its warranty is up.

BMW Warranty is only like $500 more then the one you buying and covers many of the exclusions plus depending on dealer you go to they give you a freaking brand new rental BMW car for the day for free until they are done, so you do the math.

labedra: I thought BMW Extended Warranty can be bought only if you still have the original manufacturer coverage? My car is a '07 with 53k will it still cover? Can you post the price list for the coverage, because if it's only $500 more I will definitely go for it.

luv135i: I heard good things about Route 66 too, that's why I'm considering it and the price is very reasonable for an exclusionary policy.

Sickguy: when my warranty expired last year the Dealer i went to gave me 90 days to extend my warranty but I guess it depends when your BMW warranty expired, call the dealer I'm sure they want your business and will give you a right plan but if your warranty expired 2 years ago then you might be out of luck. I believe my warranty expired 8/1/12 and the cheapest was $2400 they quoted me and the most expensive was $3200 with maintenance, I only have 25K miles on my 2008 so that might play a big role also but call your local (5 star) dealer shop. Here is warranty link

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...rotection.aspx

and yes it states that if you still are covered but I asked the dealer if I can buy it after it expires and they said yes that they give me 90 days and it will be prorated so you still pay for the time you didn't use it. Don't know if it was marketing or what to push me into buying it but I figured if I can take engines apart and put them back together I don't need it CALL DEALER though and make sure it's a 5 star BMW dealer shop.

I bought my 335i 3 weeks ago and it wasn't from a BMW dealership. Car has about 58k miles. I took into the local BMW dealership for service today and they offered me a 4 year/48k mile warranty for $3500 or a 3 year/36k mile warranty for $3200. $50 deductible and loaner car, but doesn't cover stereo. I'm still debating if I want to get it. The quoted me nearly $2000 to fix a leaking valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. It's tempting!

So how does this Route 66 warranty works. Lets say some shit breaks down. Do you take your car to bmw dealership or to local shop? Does Route 66 cover towing too?

Works like every other extended warranty. Take it anywhere, covers towing, 5 yrs or 100000 total miles no deductible rental reimbursement Same price no matter when you buy. Right now for bmw 3 series its 1900 but its only availible through financial institutions. For this one you have to have less than 65k miles. They have other warranties if you have more than that mileage. For me since i will never hit 100k anytime soon i will get the additional 5 yrs of coverage for 1900. Covers the samething the bmw powertrain warranty covers and you get an extra 2 yrs of coverage since this one starts after your original warranty is over. Cant beat that. But if your looking for platinum like coverage which is idrive and electronics then this isnt the one for you.

So if you don't have idrive, is the platinum a waste of money?

One question to ask is whether or not they consider turbochargers to be "Exhaust or emission parts". And even though BMW has extended coverage on turbos - it is tied strictly to the wastegate as the failure mechanism so not all turbo failures will be covered.

To answer another question, you can buy a BMW extended warranty outside of the warranty period - it is only powertrain coverage and it can be for periods from 1-3 years and 12-36K miles depending on how many miles and how many months you are outside of the original warranty.

So my transmission will be covered if it goes out?

The one that was offered to me is bumper-to-bumper minus the stereo and iDrive system. Like I said before, my car has 58k miles and was bought from a non-BMW dealer.
