I have one in now, seems smoother. Kinda like it felt with my old LCI n54 E90.

is it pre-oiled? how much is the cleaning kit?
I didn't want to risk oiling up the MAF...but I didn't even know if we had one.

and most importantly, how does BMW react to it from a warranty perspective?....I just figure since they cover the air filters under basic maintenance, not worth the $37?

To me it just doesn't make sense from a cost perspective...I had filters on previous cars because I would wash and clean after each oil change I did.
Gone are the days i had time to wash, wax, oil change and filter clean my car...

K&N has been around a long time, and AFE is a relative newcomer to the oiled-cotton "lifetime" filter element, although AFE also has some dry filters that are said to be more efficient. Interestingly enough, the Dinan CF intake for the E9X series included a K&N element for the stock airbox (their CF top with the extra snorkel replaces the stock top) and also a small cylindrical filter (6" long x 3" diameter) that fits on the end of the snorkel ahead of the fender liner. They flow pretty good, but I kind of wonder if there'd be any "gain" other than not having to replace the stock one at every scheduled oil service. Guess it depends on how dusty/dirty your driving environment is.

This. With all the sensors etc., I would be scared of a warranty issue. Go with AFE dry filter if you are really interested in trying something new. Personally, I am leaving well enough alone for now.
