My hope for the S55 comes from....Porsche?

Yes, that's right, Porsche. I would invite all of you to view Evo magazine (UK's) interview with 'Mr. GT3' Andreas Preuninger. Many of you might have read this, and indeed, the comparison with the new, 991 based 911 GT3 to the upcoming F80 / F80 M3 / M4 is apt. How to you take a very analog car, an iconic analog car at that, and make it relevant in the digital age?

http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/28..._pictures.html

While Porsche has not changed to turbocharging as BMW has, I am hoping (maybe too much, but I believe it is well founded) that the BMW engineers will follow many of the same credos that were followed by the Porsche design team in updating the GT3 to the 991 chassis.

BMW knows that the M5 and M6 are different animals than the M3. The M3 is race derived and is designed to be much harder core than the M5. Although the switch to turbos will inevitably dull this somewhat, from what I have read here, I believe that BMW will not lose the plot with the F80 / F82. These modern components can be tuned to have the same type of feel and effect that the older ones do.

No, you're never going to have the thrill of 8,000 RPM in a turbo engine, but that doesn't mean it can't be just as exciting.

In any event, a really cool video and I was struck by the candid answers to the questions...as well as the parallels to what we are facing moving from E9X to F8X!!

Good, upbeat post.

Only thing I'll add is that the Mclaren 3.8TT offers 8,500rpm, so it can be done. And no, I'm not really comparing a 70k M3 with a 200k MP4, but I do think we could see a rise in the M5s TTs 7200 redline to 7400-7800rpm or so.

I just hope it drives well and sounds decent.

Sounds like you are looking for the next M2.

M3 has lost it's "hardcore character" since the E9X.

How so? The E9x M3 has pretty much spanked every car in its class since it came out. The likes of Merc C63, Audi RS4 and pretty close to the same level and in some cases edges out, the brand new RS5. It has gotten a little porkier but so has the competition so, how has it lost its edge if it either closely matches or beats its comp.???
If a hardcore, dedicated track car is what you want, then get an M3 GTS - if you can find one.. Or Porsche... Or Miata..... or or or

As you said: "in it's class" ... These other cars don't really qualify as hardcore either, do they ? They are luxury and heavy saloon cars, allthough they get well around the track indeed.

M3 CSL, Lotus Exige, GT3, Caterham, and even the BMW 1M do qualify more as hardcore in my book.

PS: hardcore has nothing to do with how fast car X gets around the track compared to car Y, but more about how dedicated the car setup is for performance vs comfort/luxury.

Well said. I was going to mention that to him but you took care of it.

Funny how you mention all these "hardcore" cars and forget about the E92 M3 GTS.

See post #7. You obviously don't know what you're talking about either
