Choosing an S5 over a 335 coupe?
When the Audi S5 comes out I am seriously considering trading in my 330i for the S5, am I sinning for not choosing the 335 coupe instead
I have to admit I am intrigued by the styling of the S5, it has very muscular lines. |

If you like the S5 better and can afford the pricier tag, then go for it!
I think it will boil down when you drive both cars. And pricing if that is a concern to you. |

I am curious to see what it looks like in person. If you guys remember...I come from having 7 Audis in a row...I definitely know the merits of Audi ownership and quattro.

i'm not a fan of the S5. it looks like a bad copy from the E92..
and there's a big price difference. i know, the S5 is faster, but with the money which you safe if you buy a 335i, you can make it faster then the S5! |

The money you save from a 335i, you can make a G37/IS350 faster!

Funny this post about the S5 came up--I was going to post something about it today
I was at a stop sign yesterday and a white car came blazing down the street from the right side. It was dark and the one thing I noticed were the LED's in the headlamps. When the car passed I thought it was a E92! The shape from the side and the taillights looked almost E92'ish. First thing I thought was "I gotta catch up and find out where the guy got the LED mod for the head lamps." When I caught up to him I was like "what a freak--putting a S emblem on a BMW." And then it hit me.
Really really really nice looking car. I'm a twin turbo man though so I wouldn't even think of it.

Just as a lay person, there's no question, the Audi is better looking.
I was, however, surprised by the HP/TQ numbers and fuel economy, I mean it does carry the "S" designation. The numbers are not impressive. The weight distribution was a disappointment too, there's a reason why Audi can't shake the FWD image. You're right about resale, I read in Business Week that Audi is trying hard to shake their 2nd tier German image. It's a beautiful car, but for the price I think it should offer more. Many don't give a hoot about resale because they lease, in which case it's about monthly payment. Sure depreciation should be reflected in the lease payment, but it can be made less apparent. |

if you like the s5, get it.. there is no reason to be asking a bmw forum what YOU really want. obviously you have to research and wait for the s5 to come out to actually get a feel of the car. Im sure you have many criterias that the car must meet for your everyday needs so it will be easy to see which one will be more useful to you.

+1. :rocks: However, I have to say that the S5 does look great and the interior...well, you know. The only thing is that the price of the S5 with some options will be very close (if not the same or more) than the E92 M3 with similar options; for that high cost, I'd say the M3 is a better car...but so is a 335i w/ PROcede (at least in terms of speed and overall performance).

Your post compares the 335 and the S5 so I won't address the new M3. S5 wins hands down. The 335 is not in the same league.
I can't tell you how much better my '05 S4 is than my 335. The more I drive them back to back, the steering, braking, at the limit handling, and all the interior materials are superior in the Audi. The velvety smoothness and sound of a V8 is worth losing a couple HP to the 335. Still I am happy because I ride my 335 with the top down mostly and I still have my S4 when I want. If they announce a hard top cabrio S5, my E93 will be on sale the next day.

If you haven't seen this article, then check it out; it's very well written and a nice comparo... http://www.motivemagazine.com/pub/fe..._Audi_S5.shtml btw -- yes, they do say that the S5 is directed to a "higher" market class (same as the BMW 6-series and Jaguar XK) as it's much more expensive than the BMW and Infiniti. Here are some segments from the article... "The S5's double-wishbone front/multilink rear suspension isn't BMW-taut either. Poke the 4.2-liter, 354-hp, direct-injection V-8 and the front end will rise up like a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. On the track, the suspension feels soft and the car leans hard into corners. The steering is light and more prone to kick back than it is to communicate, disconnecting the driver from the action. The S5's power and torque advantages allow it to keep pace with the other two cars, but the experience is less involving. Just vaguely point the car, mash the throttle, and it goes. Pricing for the 2008 Audi S5 hasn't been announced yet, but when it hits American streets in November, it should cost about $15,000 more than the base 335i. That would make it one very expensive sports coupe, but after driving the Audi, it becomes apparent that the S5 is aimed at a different market. It's more of a grand tourer, in a class with the BMW 650i and Jaguar XK. By those standards, this gorgeous Audi is quite a deal. It isn't meant for the tight corners the 335i and G37 call home, and its mission isn't to show that punk kid in the Civic Si why he's lower on the performance food chain. The S5 minds its own business, cruising graciously and effortlessly. In the world of automotive fantasy, the S5 is the wardrobe of the group. It's the intricate work of a proud designer, with an interior full of tailored and elegant materials. At the same time, the S5 feels as heavy and imposing as, well, a fine piece of furniture. That makes the Infiniti G37 the lion of the group, announcing its presence with an angry exhaust roar. The car's brute force and energy make it seem far lighter than it really is. It is far more refined than the G35 it replaces, but it still possesses some of the coarseness that makes it intimidating. Value also works in the G37's favor. A base-model car starts at $34,250, which is not only $6550 cheaper than a 335i, it undercuts the 240-hp 328i by a thousand dollars, too. If price-per-horsepower is important to you, the G37 is hard to beat, but the BMW still nails more intangibles. BMW's ability to magically keep the 3-series ahead of the competition makes the 335i the witch. The company hasn't made a turbocharged gasoline engine since the Bee Gees were on the charts, yet that didn't keep this generation of BMW engineers from virtually eliminating turbo lag on their first try. The driver's seat is always inviting, and sitting in it gives you a direct link to the car's soul. There's considerable price premium over the Infiniti, but if you have the means, you won't regret it. Just think of at $6550 as an investment into five generations of engineering perfection. This is no Narnia. In the chronicles of sports coupes, the witch is still on top."
