Winter storage engine tick
So I stored my 06 325i and had a few weeks since it was started. When I started it there was a ticking noise that increased with engine revs. I ran for about 10 mins and it never went away. Couple days did the same thing and tick is still there. Might this disappear after driving in spring when engine is lubbed and driven? Same happened on my 01 325it and after driving it solved itself.
Thanks |

I believe with bigger engines such as the straight six included in your BMW, they'll have a loud humming sound when started on cold days but it should be gone once the engine's warmed up.

The ticking is most common 06 models but others with new models have experience it also. BMW have redesigned the head of the motor which helped. I have same year as you, there's a few thread on this ticking noise, it doesn't hurt the motor but the ticking can be annoying, takes a good drive for everything to warm up then the noise goes away. As long as I don't let the car sit for more than 4-5 days straight, I don't get the ticking, that's just another reason for me to take the car out for a nice drive every few days, and when its fully warmed up, I let her rip in manual sport mode

I have had this happen twice before. Both times I took the car out and drove aggressive for about 5-10 mins and it went away. The engine in your car is prone to this issue with prolonged parking and/or signficant driving at low speed. Basically the consensus seems to be that the oil pressure to the lifters is low under those conditions resulting in this noise.

yea some shit about hydraulic lifters and all that.
the dealer used to do something to fix the regular tick issue, they rev the car up and let it sit revving high for 10 or 15 minutes or something. personally that would worry me, i would rather drive the crap out of it. |

PROCEDURE Important notes: The bleed time may take anywhere from between two minutes and (in rare cases) to a maximum of 30 minutes. This procedure is to be performed on a level surface with the vehicle stationary, and in a properly ventilated area. Procedure preconditions: Engine oil level correct – neither underfilled nor overfilled Engine running at operating temperature Bring the engine up to an operating speed (no load) of 2000-3000 rpm and maintain this condition for three minutes (bleeding procedure). Let the engine idle for 15-30 seconds and reevaluate whether the noise is still present or not. Engine quiet – procedure is finished. Engine noise is still present – repeat the procedure; perform steps #1 and #2 up to a maximum of 5 times. Only if the noise remains after performing the bleeding procedure 5 times: proceed by performing the procedure for a final time, also at an engine operating speed of 2000-3000 rpm, but for a total time duration of 15 minutes |
