what other petrol fuelled, turbo charged cars have you driven?
the N20 and N54/55 are a delight compared to at least three other engines I can recall driving. I have a suspicion you're mistaking turbo lag for your transmission adjusting to deal with your foot stomping on the loud pedal. try going to 1st in manual gear selection mode and tell me if you still experience lag. I believe you'll experience the traction control light flashing instead. |

yeap. i drive a 8AT. after driving my mates f30 335 (also 8AT) for 2 days i hate going back to my 328 now.
not because of power,it's the initial reaction when i put my foot down. It's all got down to smaller engine, smaller torque and higher psi and lower compression then 335 i guess.

its the 4cyl 2.0L engine. Try feeding the fuel into the engine then push the hard. By just thumping the pedal, you are flooding the engine (happens to small engines). Adapt is my only advice

And I don't think this is because of the torque converter shutting down after 2 sec. Didn't feel that on 335.
I think it applies on all driving mode except sport and sport plus is way better due to sharper throttle body response but turbo response remains the same or little bit better due to The better air flow from Tb.

So, if you have an issue, which is replicated each and every time you take off in a moderate to spirited manner from standstill, take your car back to the dealer for analysis. At the same time test drive at least one other 328i, but don't compare it with the 335i for any performance comparisons. As you know, it will end in 'tears'.

Coming from an X1 s20d I thought the turbo lag was minimal and linearity much superior. Comfort has a soft response to throttle but I don't think it is nearly as bad as what was described in the opening post.
To be honest I think there is too much of a gap between Comfort and Sport. People talk about turbo lag. The NA engine in the E90 323i or 325i had no lag but not nearly as much shove either in low to mid range. Comparing to the 335i is just pointless given the capacity, power and torque difference. |

My car has no mechanism issues, it's normal. 2 sec is a bit exaggerating, more like 1 sec.
I don't think I'm unfairly comparing 328 to 335 as the response feel I am hoping for shouldn't require an extra 1000cc and 50nm more of torque. Car doesn't need 100% full use of it power and torque to take of with 70% throttle. Anyone still don't know what I'm saying get urself a 335 and drive it 2-3 days straight and u'll know what I'm talking about.

The F30 328i comes with a 2 litre turbocharged engine. Without the turbo it wouldn't have been much better than the anemic E90 320i. Let's say the E90 320i gets to 100km/h in 9s. So for the sake of this comparison let's say the turbo knocks 3 seconds off.
What would the F30 335i be without the turbo? Like a E90 330i? Which is what? 6.3s to 100? So the turbo knocks 0.8 seconds off. My point is that the 328i depends a lot more on the turbo for its performance than the 335i. That should be quite clear. The extra 1000cc is like 50% more in capacity. You know what capacity a NA engine with the response you are hoping for would need to produce 350 Nm of torque? Roughly 3.5 litre. Or a much more lightly turbocharged 3 litre engine. |

So you were complaining about what exactly? That BMW should rewrite the law of physics?
Just enjoy your car mate. It is a great car. The N20 is always going to come up short against the N55 but the 335i another 30k more which quite frankly is ridiculous pricing for a 3 that is not an M. Last edited by jctg; 02-08-2013 at 03:30 PM.. |
